I would seem to have disabled this somehow. Anyone know how I can re-enable
it? I've tried with another mouse, no difference. I can use the mousewheel to
scroll other things just fine. It's only Google Maps wot don't work.

try a couple of other browsers and also try quit/relaunching safari.

did you change any setting, either in safari, for the mac or even the
network?

Works OK in Firefox, and restarting safari did nothing.

Had that with 2-finger zoom in Safari earlier. Thought I was going mad!
Just didn't work. Was reduced to clicking the + & -

Came accross this annoying behavour (until I worked it out) for some reason
while reading google groups using firefox when I moved the mouse whell up and down
the size of text went up and down rather than the page/text moving up and down.
After a while I realsed that my arm was sightly pressing down on the ctrl key, cmd key does the same.

Yes, fine here too using the default agent string in Safari. So I dunno what
they did, but the trick of using another agent string isone to remember.

Is there an equivalent in Firefox? I find zooming extremely annoying
and would like to switch it off.

I'm not sure, but the above was due to (it looks like) Google Maps
breaking something to do with the OS (system) zooming feature in Safari.

Pity, I've cursed that accidental zooming on many occasions and would
happily turn it off if I knew how.

I wouldn't think you can do it at an app level, but (if not wanting to
turn it off altogether) can't you set a modifier key so you can't zoom
unintentionally?

for shifting the map around. That's because a map is quasi-infinite in extent,
and zooming is something done often. But it makes no sense in other contexts
to zoom using such a simple thing as the mouse-wheel. So one doesn't zoom in
Preview, or Office apps, in this way and that is correct IMO.

This zooming is not to be confused with zooming the screen using
CRTL-mousewheel.
