I understand that the preferred pronunciation is Bus’ tard but perhaps
their parents don’t hang around long enough to explain this to them
normally.

(I hope I have the attribution right. Apologies if not.)

I believe the conversation would go something like this:

Caller: "Good morning. May I speak to Mr Cherry, please?"
Telephonist: "I'm sorry, he's on holiday today."
C: "Then may I speak to Mr Cherry?"
T: "He is engaged with a client at the moment."
C: "In that case I'll speak to Mr Cherry, please.
T: "Certainly, sir, putting you through now."

I dimly remember a scene to that effect in an old TV programme -
possibly The Avengers (when it starred Patrick McNee and Diana Rigg and
I used to watch it). Along the lines of PMcN (if it was he) visiting a
firm called, let's say, Archer, Archer & Archer:

"May I speak to Mr Archer, please?"
"I'm sorry, sir. I'm afraid Mr. Archer died some years ago."
"Ah - then perhaps I could see Mr Archer instead?"
"Sadly, he, too, is now deceased, sir."
"Then I wonder whether Mr. Archer might be available?"
"Indeed I am, sir. How may I help?"
