There is a Vinho Verde my wife is fond of which we used to import from Portugal. Now with the Brexiteers' tax as well as freightage it is (I am told bu some friends who also like it) cheaper in Britain. Majestic claim to have it and have a near enough branch so I'll check that out soon.

B is using his 3D printer a lot more this year than previously. His
3rd and much larger 3D printer. He says it is not using that much and
gave me an extra £100 t cover recent use. We don't now want a smart
meter though, even if our meter lid didn't mean we can'thave one. I
did when they first came out but have gone off smart ones since
hearing tales of them.

I used to like that wine. Was it in a flat round bottle? Or are they
all?

Not all; when Laithwaites send me a Vino Verdhe[1] it comes in an
ordinarily shaped bottle.

Flat and round remind me of the Mateus Rosé of my youth, though. (A
quick google shows that it's still available, which is a surprise to me.)

Exactly. And if you can't do spreadsheets, do what Eccles did, and get
it written down on a piece of paper.

I don't have gas. Two electricity meters, one for heating/hot water
and one for "domestic". Two separate contracts. Heating price has just
gone up, but I have a year's grace till "domestic" does.

Supplier is EDF. They emailed me last week. "Thanks for being with
EDF. Here's your energy summary:
Over the last 12 months you’ve used 2,339kWh"

I read my meters monthly, and keep a rolling 12 month usage column.
Unsurprisingly, the domestic usage doesn't vary very much from month
to month, and I was interested to note that my usage figure for the
last 12 months was 2,337kWh.

When they sent their price increase letter in March, they suggested
that I might want to start paying an increased DD now, rather than
allow a large debt to accrue. I looked at my spreadsheet, did a quick
calculation, and made a suggestion, which they accepted. All by email
and all within a week.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Electricity-Monitor-Consumption-Analyzer-Display/dp/B09QS7VKHS/ref=sr_1_9?crid=VJDEONQ5D0JH&keywords=energy%2Bmonitor&qid=1651479647&sprefix=energy%2B%2Caps%2C101&sr=8-9&th=1

You can get a small electricity monitor such as the above that will tell
you how much power a device is using. Very easy to use and if you know
how long B is doing 3D printing you can work out how much it is costing.

A quick Google finds a 3D printer that uses 360W. If you were to use
that for 10 hours it would be 3.6 kWh and at 22p (cheaper overnight)
cost 79p. So either he has a VERY big one (is it red and shiny ?) or is
using it full time if he thinks it is using £100 worth.

Are you sure he's not mining Bitcoin as well ? :)

I can't google any vino verde in flat bottles so maybe I was thinking
of Mateus Rose, also a nice wine.

Bitcoin is so passee. He did think £100 covered much more than it
cost for any printing. It can do a single piece 18ins high and 12ins
wide but obviously you can do single pieces and fit them together. He
printed a robot with jointed, moveable arms and legs that
granddaughter loved.

We used to have the meters in the garage but when we built the extension
moved them to external boxes and kept the companies concerned advised of
the changes.

Some months later received an urgent phone call to say access was needed
to the garage to read the meters. I asked why they were wasting my time
- clearly they had not bothered to update their records.

I'm a bulb customer too and when my smart meter was only working for gas,
so I was sending readings for electricity, that's exactly what happened.

Is your meter outside, could it have been an actual meter reader?

IIRC, Mateus Rosé had a more narrow neck than the norm, which made it
hard to fit a substitute cork (assuming you didn't swig the lot at a
single sitting).

<swerve> We haven't tasted any Vino Verdhe for yonks. Must have a look
on Ocado.

Sorry. I was going to say that it doesn't really apply at the moment
because I've not had any wine or other alcoholic beverage for a couple

I've not tasted it for decades. It reminds me of family visits to a
Berni Inn for a Special Occasion in the late 60s/early 70s. Eating out
was not a feature of our family life.[1] Nor was wine. I think I'd
heard of Mateus Rosé and Lutomer Riesling.

[1] I had a girlfriend a little later (1973-ish) whose parents took us
out a couple of times, once to a Chinese restaurant and also to the
Gardenia in Cambridge, a Greek place that served proper kebabs in pita
bread. I'd never heard of any of the food and was miles out of my depth
- or "comfort zone" as we're obliged to say now - in both. I liked the
food, though, in spite of being terrified of making a fool of myself.

Growing up in Germany, we _did_ often have wine, but its only since
leaving that I have noticed grape varieties come to the fore: it may be
that I never noticed it, but I am pretty sure that there, what was
prominent on the label was (a) where it was grown, (b) the quality
rating (from what I remember Tafelwein, Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese [and
Eiswein, but I only had that once!]) - very roughly, the later in the
season the better as the grapes grow more sugar, but there's the
increased risk of them being destroyed by frost. (Eiswein is from grapes
harvested the morning of the first frost, and thus rare. [Delicious
though!]) But anyway, grape _varieties_ - Riesling, Pinot Noir, and so
on - was something I don't _remember_ being mentioned much until I was
back in England and hearing about wines from other countries, mostly
France.

IKWYM! My parents liked to find variety - both in eating out and at
home; although she'd probably have said she didn't like doing it, I
think my Mum was a good cook, and generally would rarely have produced
the same meal two days running - despite my assurance that that would
have been fine by me!

We had Mateus Rose once a year at Christmas

Ditto. Although I do remember going to a Chinese restaurant in Barrow
when I was about 11. It was a revelation, esp. lychees.

I went to a special dinner with silver service (Grandma was qualified to
provide that and earned some pin money several times a year) when I was
in the 6th form, something to do with ATC, organised by Paedo Pete
(never tried it on with anyone I knew, but he was widely suspected by
the cadets) which was "interesting".

Dad had also told me about his game for Combined Service against France
in Paris shortly after the war and in a very posh restaurant was
astonished to see a very elegant lady in diamonds and furs pick up a
chicken leg with her hands to eat it.

It all stood me in good stead for my first dinners in the Officers Mess
which was all a bit daunting.

Dinner at my parents' house with daughter, aged 4. Daughter: "Grannie,
Mummy said not to tell you that we eat chicken with our fingers at home."

Well, if she would insist on wolfing down her chicken like that, it's
not surprising it came back out of her mouth again, is it?
