A footbridge, that can also be used by cyclists, is due to be lifted into place in a city centre.

The new 11ft wide (3.5m) bridge will span the River Soar next to Abbey Corner Bridge in Leicester.

Leicester City Council said it was due to be hoisted into place by a huge crane on Saturday.

The authority said the bridge formed part of a £7.5m revamp of Abbey Park Road, which includes new bus lanes and footpaths.
'Appealing'

The council said the bridge was being assembled, ready for the final lift into position.

Once in place, the new footbridge will run parallel to the existing Grade-II listed Abbey Corner Bridge, which dates from 1878 and, the authority said, required extensive repairs and would remain closed until the new year.

The council said it would take cyclists off the narrow road bridge and help ensure there was space for all road users.

The new footbridge is due to be open for pedestrians and cyclists from 25 April.

Deputy city mayor Adam Clarke, who leads on environment and transportation, said: "This new footbridge is the centrepiece of an ambitious revamp of Abbey Park Road that will help radically change the way that people think about travelling on this important route.

"As it stands, the existing road bridge can be a daunting prospect for cyclists at busy times. The new footbridge will create more space and help make Abbey Park Road a safer, more appealing and people-friendly route."

3.5m wide! That's not enough for a 1.5m clearance, plus wobble
allowance, for a cyclists approaching in opposite directions.

And who cares about the pedestrians?

Send it back and get a wider one.

I could have done with that bridge when I cycled from Bristol - Hull in 2005 instead of the busy A46.

Exactly!

The claim nowadays is that a fairy-cyclist needs an envelope or "bubble"
9' 10" wide so that he can wobble to his heart's content.

That's 19' 8" in order to provide a lane in each direction.

3.5 metres is only eleven and a half feet.
>
> And who cares about the pedestrians?

Certainly not fairy-cyclists!

> Send it back and get a wider one.

In order to cater for pedestrians (let's say 4 feet lanes in both
directions) as well as fairy-cyclists, the bridge would need provide at
least 27' 82 between parapets.

That's well over twice as wide as the one cited.

Of course, the claims about fairy-cyclists needing a 9' 10" "bubble" in
each direction could just be a load of old tosh. Everything else claimed
by fairy-cyclists is.

The "2" should have been a pair of inverted commas, thus:

In order to cater for pedestrians (let's say 4 feet lanes in both
directions) as well as fairy-cyclists, the bridge would need provide at
least 27' 8" between parapets.

The main thing about my non stop 235 mile ride was getting stuck on the Leicester ring road in an attempt to stay on the Roman Fosse Way at 0500h. Had to buy a map!

235 miles non-stop?

Even at red traffic lights? [Silly question, one might suppose.]

How did you buy the map? Did you get the shop assistant to run alongside
you with it?

No stopping even at cafés to claim the free glasses of water you say
non-paying "customers" are somehow legally entitled to?

And not even at village greens in order to vacate your bowels?

Perhaps you should be in the Guinness Book of Records.

Well, for a start, there's an instruction sign saying:

It's almost a year since the path reopened after closing for safety concerns:
Now there are no restrictions in place.
QUOTE:

More than a month after their sudden closure, the footways on the Humber Bridge reopened to cyclists and pedestrians this morning. Cycling UK has been pressing the bridge Board to justify its decision to close this vital link to those using active travel, and welcomes this news – but there are still some caveats.

People on cycles or on foot can now cross the bridge between the hours of 5am and 9pm without the need to register in advance; however, anyone wishing to cross outside these hours will still need to send their details to bridge officials ahead of time. There still appears to be no mention of this on the main Humber Bridge website, however when Cycling UK made an enquiry via the toll payment site humbertag.com, a representative confirmed that in order to cross the footways between 9pm and 5am, people need to email mail@humberbridge.co.uk to register.

Sadly, people are still wandering onto the bridge for the wrong reasons. :-(
