I've been happily using TextMate since 2009, but it's time to start thinking
about moving on.

I mostly write Python and rST, plus the occasional Dockerfile or YAML
configuration file.

What's your favourite text editor, and what do you use it for?

BBedit these days, used just for general text file editing and in conjunction with slrn.
Like TextMate it can be opened from the command line.

Of course most apps can be opened in the cli using open -a but some such as BBEdit and
TextMate can install their own set of cli tools.

Claris Works 4 for all the usual 'office' stuff, service manuals with
embedded diagrams, radio scripts and long articles for magazines.
Pagemaker 6.5 for short articles and general magazine layout (the text
often has to be edited on the page to fit the layout). BBEdit for
programming and for opening mis-named files with'unknown' formats.

My advice is for you to continue drinking, continue to post your stupid
links to your stupid files in the hope that someone will open it so you can
track them, and continue to generally be the useless doofus that you are.

BBEdit... it's been around since 1992, so it's native, optimised, and
can handle pretty much anything you can chuck at it.

There used to be a free version called TextWrangler, but now BBEdit
itself is free with all the same features, and you can pay a one-off fee
to unlock the rest if you wish.

Have been using it for ages for writing websites, sifting through huge
textfiles (it can handle way over 100MB with ease), comparing files, taking
notes, etc.

+1

The developers are long term Mac-ies, the support's great too. It also
opens zip files and tarballs without having to expand them first, which
is extremely useful for me.

And if you need syntax support for some unusual sort of file, there's a
couple of supported ways to write plugins.

I would agree it is an emacs that has been tuned to act more like a normal macOs app and with useful additions added out of the box so you don't need to do much configuring, but it is emacs so you can add more if you want to

I used to use this up to last year but unfortunately its current development has slipped a bit so it its using an older version of emacs as its base so it does not run natively on Apple Silicon and some of the eeacs add ons I want to use need a newer emacs than aquamacs provides. The current maintainer last week said "The large merge is in progress! Bits all over the floor right now, as it were...." when that is done others could help.

So I am using plain emacs now.

I still use emacs (and vi) in Linux. But, as I said, BBEdit is now
my preferred text editor in macOS. Thinking about Classic Mac,
SimpleText usually met my needs!

I used to use emacs/xemacs back on Solaris, but it was always a bit
strange (copy/paste in and out of emacs for example) and because the
whole OS never really had a consistent UI, it worked OK.

I tried Aquamacs on OS X a while ago and *really* didn't get on with it
as it stood out as being a bit too odd. Something like bbedit works much
better for me.
