Hi Vicky, I am slowly going through all this and I can certainly
sympathise with you - it is all very confusing.

Do you have the meter readings for earlier periods ?
If you could send separate posts (or emails if you prefer - my reply-to
address is good) for:
2018
2019
2020 (up to October)
so I can see which were estimates and when you sent in readins and/or
they read the meters themselves.

If all 3 years is too much, then start with 2018 as it looks like there
were lots of problems right from the beginning so if we can get to the
bottom of that...

Do you have the closing readings for the previous energy company ?
Why is the date for Opening Estimate in March when you started the
account in January ?

As indicated above !!!

I'll look at this in more detail later/tomorrow. I've got all the other
data in a spreadsheet now and it is all very confusing so I need to tie
the meter readings back to the bills for 2018 but my head spinning too
much at the moment and AGCs about to arrive from school :)

I suspect that this is the root cause of all the problems. The next
statement (which was above this one), shows an opening estimate of 4744
and then a reading of 4958 on Apr 26. It looks like the first of the
decimals has been included in these figures, thus inflating the units
used by a factor of 10.

They obviously rectified this error in April, but I'm guessing there is
some hangover of that original calculation in all the later estimates.

Do you know where the Opening Estimate came from ? I think when I
switched the numbers were passed on by Octopus (I only switched to Bulb
because they could handle FIT at the time but Octopus couldn't). Or did
you supply these numbers ? Later on the readings you sent are labelled
as Cust Read and there are others that are labelled Read, but maybe they
changed this labelling. Did you keep emails that acknowledge receipt of
Meter Readings ?
My earliest Bulb invoice is Feb 2019 and that shows Elec and gas
different and also different from yours, so I suspect they were Bulb
readings e.g.
My Elec 27 January 2019 7771 Opening Customer Read
26 February 2019 7895 Customer Read
My Gas 27 January 2019 2192 Opening Read
12 February 2019 2192 Customer Read
26 February 2019 2354 Customer Read

Correction: The gas readings ARE labelled Customer Read for 26 April, so
it looks like the earlier ones were read by Bulb and entered incorrectly.

Have you escalated this to Ofgem at any stage or involved CAB ?

I complained most months and they corrected entries. We are supposedly
read by a meter reader 4 times a year. Didn't escalate it. I thinkwe
probably came out even.I stopped the DD when annoyed that they took
moer than one sum unauthorised but subsequent months DD were very low
for 3 or 4 months. I now pay monthly. It seem very high but costs of
fuel has gone up.

No as bulb handled the changeover. I assume from the previous
supplier. I can't remember who that was. We have always had estimated
gas readings that were way out.

I am sure you haven't lost money except perhaps on interest on money
paid by DD unnecessarily, but there has been a lot of angst for you and
extra work to correct things, so I would certainly complain again. I am
happy to put together a detailed analysis for you to help. I have the
costs by month and hence estimates for each year, but I will need the
remaining meter readings for the rest of 2018 and 2019 and 2020 to do
that. If you could cut and paste them in the right date order please it
would help

I stopped the DD when annoyed that they took

Indeed it has, but now would be a good time to do a realistic estimate
of annual usage and pay a Direct debit starting now so it is smoothed
out over the year. Of course there's a strong chance that prices will
increase again in the autumn, and some people don't like lending their
money to energycos, so you may prefer to continue to pay monthly, but I
strongly recommend sending meter readings every month.

I know my bills are around the 28th of every month like yours, so I have
a reminder in my calendar on the 24th to read the meters. I also get an
email from Bulb around then saying that my bill is due in 3 days - you
should get that too as long as you are paperless and it doesn't go in
spam folder.

When I receive that email I take photographs, including of the date and
time as the meter scrolls round so I have that as well as the timestamp
in the .jpg. I crop the .jpgs on my phone which also makes them much
smaller and send them in an email to myself. I then store the .jpgs in a
folder on my laptop in case of any disputes and record the values in a
spreadsheet. The final step is to send the meter readings to Bulb so I
have only missed 1 month in the 3 years I have been with them, so never
normally a need for estimates and they would all be easily identifiable
if unreasonable.

It looks like you have often (e.g. Feb-Apr 21) sent multiple readings in
the space of a few days, but rarely in the 3 day window when Bulb will
accept them when calculating the bill. Doing it once a month at the
right time (fnarr) takes some discipline but makes life easier in the
long run.

I won't be able to do any more on this until next week as we are away at
Drother's in the SW for the weekend, but I am more than happy to finish
the analysis of meter readings if you want to send the data over the
next 5 days.

PS If you can find data from statements for May 2021 that would help
too please.

I don't actually want the hassle of complaining to offgen, but it is
kind of you to offer to help.

I prefer not to have bulb storing any of my money, thanks :) I will
manage the differing months' costs.

I get a paper bill monthly now and also check on line. They use the
reading I sent 4 or 5 days before the 28th and I do put it on the
calendar to take them.

The readings are all on line on bulb's site since I joined so I don't
keep other copies.

I think the multiple readings close together might sometimes be me
reading, then the meter reader, and then a new one after I complain.

I feel bad that you've set all this up and done so much work on it
already and think you should give up now. I was partly showing that
bulb are not always getting it right but think they have been polite
about complaints and are inefficient rather than malevolent. B thinks
all energy companies make it hard to understand the bills and make
their system clunky so they can confuse customers and sit there
holding much more than they should.

Don't worry - I enjoy doing this sort of stuff and have plenty of time !

OK

I agree to a certain extent, but they should realise that their
projections for gas are simply absurd. 2 or 3 times more than you've
ever paid in a year. I think the algorithms are OK, but it's something
to do with that rogue reading right at the start which sends their
computations doolally
