I had my first A-Z vax yesterday. I feel like shit today. I spent most
of last night shivering and piling on as many blankets as I could find.
I awoke with a most appallingly bad headache. My partner was even worse
off. Hopefully it will be worth it.

Sorry to hear you're having such a bad time with it. I had mine the day
before, with little ill-effect beyond a sore arm.

Be nice to know whether there's a correlation between one's reaction to
the vaccine and the reaction one would have had had one caught the virus
while unvaccinated. Unfortunately, it's hard to see how such data could
be acquired.

Sylvia.

I had mine 3 weeks ago, a few aches and pains on the day I had it which
disappeared by the next morning.
My wife had flu like symptoms for 2 days.
With the shit hitting the fan down here again looks like getting the
vaccination was a good idea.

I'm sure it will be.

Apparently 1 in 4 have short term reactions to the AZ vaccine, ranging
from the symptoms you described to nausea, diarrhea, headaches and joint
aches and pains. I had my first shot about 3 weeks ago and had an upset
gut and headache the next day, and joint pains the following one which
is apparently quite common in people with prosthetic joints like I have.
Been fine ever since, but hoping that the second round shot is a bit easier.

I have to laugh though at the nutbags who refuse to get it on the
grounds that "they'll get blood clots and die", even though the
statistics show that you have more chance of dying from taking Aspirin :)

Very.

Like the virus itself, you cannot know how badly you would be affected
until after you'd have it in which case it's too late to do anything
about it.

**Well, I did the maths.

Chances of dying from COVID-19 (for someone my age) = 1 in 200
Chances of dying from a blood clot = 1 in 100,000

Doesn't take a genius to work out that vaccinations are the sane approach.

The number seems to change on a daily basis. The last figures I saw
published anywhere put things at 1 in 250 thousand, which was less
likely than dying in a plane crash.

As of May 6, over 1.4 million doses of AZ had been administered in
Australia, and 11 people had developed blood clots which were likely to
be a direct side effect of receiving the vaccine with 1 of those 11
people dying as a result.

I'm in no mood to work out the chances based on those figures, other
than to say that the risk is *so* small it would be difficult to
reliably quantify. By comparison, 3000 people in Australia last year
developed blood clots from taking the contraceptive pill......

> Doesn't take a genius to work out that vaccinations are the sane approach.

it's not just blood clots per se that you get with AZ it's a special
kind of blood clotting

Thing is, some are doing the calculation on the basis that the borders
will remain closed until everyone's vaccinated, so there's no urgency.

Troublesome though it is (disclaimer, I'm in Sydney anyway), the
outbreak in Victoria will act as something of a wakeup call for those
who think there's no need for them to be vaccinated yet.

Sylvia.

Its already happening, the news is saying that the pending lock down is
having more affect on vaccination rates than the $40million ad campaign.

Yep, totally different kind - related to platelets IIRC. I can attest to
that since I have had to consult with 2 different specialists, one a
cardiologist, and my GP in order to determine which vaccine I should
take. Regardless, I am on lots of medication that will prevent any Astra
Zeneca clotting to take hold.

For sure, Noddy's well and truly distant from any form of sanity. His

How do you actually know this?

The borders have *not* remained closed in the last couple of months
despite there being minor flare ups around the country, meaning anyone
who does hold that view is an imbecile.

> Troublesome though it is (disclaimer, I'm in Sydney anyway), the

And this is the problem.

There is a remarkable amount of apathy on display at the moment both
from the authorities and the general public. The mood seems to be one of
"We've been through the worst of it and come out the other side in good
shape, so now there's nothing to worry about and we can get on with our
lives as normal", and you can see this attitude on open display at
sporting venues or on public transport where social distancing is not
being practiced, and while wearing masks on public transport is law very
few people seem to be prepared to adhere to it.

There is also the misguided view by many that the AstraZenica vaccine is
dangerous, and this is utter nonsense which has been blown out of all
reasonable proportion by the media. Yes, there have been some recorded
cases of side effect, and that's something that happens with *every*
drug. There is no such thing as a 100% completely safe drug. People have
died taking Paracetamol.

The reality is that per million doses the reaction rate for AstraZenica
is extremely low, and lower than that of many common everyday drugs that
people don't think twice about taking, and one of the benefits of the
current outbreak in Victoria right now is that it will snap people back
to reality and make them understand that we won't ever be rid of this
virus until the overwhelming majority of the population are vaccinated
and it's ability to be transmitted is killed off.

To quote a Medical Research Professor from Oxford University who was
asked yesterday what he thought was the best Covid vaccine you could
get, he said "whichever one you can get tomorrow".

That's because people are very, very, very fucking stupid.

I went grocery shopping today. Toilet paper, bottled water and long life
milk were marching out the door by the trolley full pushed by fucking
*morons* who have apparently not learned a God-damned thing from the
*last* two times we went through this.

You know what the *real* tragedy of this virus is? The people who
*should* be taken out by it seem to be completely immune....

Get off your mesa and discover reality. The borders do remain closed and
only exceptions are those willing to be subject to relevant quarantine
periods - both inbound and outbound.

Go on, book a ticket to some OS destination (other than bubble
countries) and see just how open the borders really are.

My wife wasn't interested in getting the vaccination till she visited
her doctor last week and the doctor convinced her that she was wrong,
doctor insisted that she wasn't leaving till she had the vaccine, after
the events of the last 24hrs she's glad that she is now vaccinated.
I actually received a text message about 4 weeks ago stating that I was
eligible so I made an appointment and had it about 3 weeks ago.
A few of my friends (Les and his wife) saw that I survived so they have
also have had it:-)
Some other friends were reluctant when I spoke to them last Sunday, I
wouldn't be surprised if they have changed their minds.

People are just weird, can't even learn from previous experiences.
I must have anticipated the lock down, I bought toilet paper a few days
ago:-)

Good.

I *really* don't get people at times. There have been *millions* of
doses of AZ administered around the world and the number of people who
have had adverse reactions is *so* small it really is quite astonishing.
Yet the fear some people have about about a possible reaction is so real
that they would rather risk catching a virus that if it doesn't kill
them will be likely to leave them permanently scarred than to get a
couple of jabs that will do little other than help save their lives.

The logic defies belief.

I saw one stupid old bitch today frantically pushing her trolley into
everyone as she scrambled for toilet paper, bottled water and long life
milk. I actually called her a "fucking idiot" as she pushed my trolley
out the way while in her rush to panic buy, but it went in one ear and
straight out the other.

She was a perfect example of why if you're ever facing serious charges
in court you should elect to have your case heard by a panel of judges
and *not* a Jury.

Sadly.

I actually saw something from Michael O'Brien, the state leader of the
Opposition, this afternoon which is about the first comment I've heard
from him that I actually thought was a good idea. He said that what the
Victorian government should be doing is stop spending millions of
dollars on advertising campaigns promoting all the major project works
it's doing, and channel the money into a massive public awareness
campaign about the benefits of vaccinations and remind everyone that
Covid is still out there.

Made sense to me.

Agree, never seen any sense in any Govt spending millions of our dollars
telling us how great they are.
