Is failing to find the one you bought when you come to use it.

Bugger.

I'm going to buy another so I can put it next to the one I can't find
when it arrives.

That worked batter than expected.

Hit buy-it-now

Walked out to the garage and lifted the tool straight out of the toolbox

I've done this more times than I care to remember. Not just tools-
recently could not find my Pilot Dr. Grip Ice Blue pen. I ordered
another, found the original shortly thereafter. Same with my ever
increasing collection of Snow Peak titanium sporks (I think I've now
got four).

PS If you're thinking of buying the Nest Hub Max as a standalone
device, forget it. You can't control it very well without using your
phone. So disappointed.

The "I know I've got one of those somewhere" syndrome.
It will only get worse - believe me.
I'm unearthing stuff in the great pre-move garage and shed declutter
that haven't seen the light of day or fluorescent tube for years - some
in duplicate, but in different "safe places".

Oh yeah, +3.

The size of things I lose in my "garage" increases all the time. The
most recent was losing one of the rearsets from my K75 project. That
took me over a year to find. (It was inside a top box).

I'd already searched the top boxes.

At least I remembered that I'd gone to Halfords and bought the 38mm
socket that I needed for the tool from the (ever shrinking) locked
cabinet of dreams

I'm glad I did find the tools as the steering head nuts were supposed to
be 15Nm, 40Nm and 90Nm respectively and they were hand tight, hand tight
and hand tight.

Still done now.

Note for when I google for it next time:-

Gyp, the special tool for the steering head is in the same drawer as the
socket sets.

As an aside, the special tool that I bought from eBay to tighten the
steering stem nuts was 3D printed and was a tenner delivered. What a
world we live in.

The secret, of course, is to have unique places for everything.*
Motorcycle gear over there, gardening tools over there, etc, etc. And
you have to be diligent with discipline to return stuff where it
belongs. That way, you only have 3 cubic metres to search, instead of
the whole garage.

* It's what differentiates hoarders from collectors.

I am pretty^H^H^H *really* bad at putting stuff away. My biggest issue
is usually when I've finished a job I'm so knackered/filthy/relieved at
having achieved something, the last thing I want to do is clear up.

Somewhere in this house, there's an old Gnome slide projector. Written
on the box, in my mother's handwriting, is something along the lines of
"if you use this one more time, and do not put it away after you have
finished with it, you will never get to use it again."

Also, increasingly these days, I have too many unfinished projects on
the go, each with their assorted pile of tools around them. So I have to
remember which project I last worked on with which tool, to narrow down
the search.

Didn't work for the soldering iron I bought, still can only find the second one.

I don't have that bit though.

My abiding memory is the screen vanished many years ago (it was lent to
someone, no-one can remember who) which meant any slide show invariably
had quite a large thermostat in it, centre stage so to speak.

I have a tool drawer and a separate box marked "Special Tools" [1].

Unfortunately, few of the special tools [2] are marked and many look
quite similar [3].

Fuck knows what half of them are for - especially the homemade ones.

Having said that, I have a WUN-made MZ 250cc gudgeon pin tool - jolly
useful. Less so now as I've stopped rebuilding MZ engines.

[1] The box is for the big and heavy stuff in anonymous plastic boxes,
such as the Jag front spring compressor - weighs a ton, supplied by Ben
Blaney from the US but his clever "Happy Birthday" message didn't fool
customs and I had to pay import duties...

[2] I have a quite heavy metal block about 100mm square 25mm thick
marked "SAAB" - I think it's suspension related.

[3] MZ clutch pullers - three types all look much the same.

That's a bit like the boxes I have in the loft, specifically retained to
facilitate the safe transportation of their original contents.

Whilst the original contents have long since gone to the tip.

FTFY.

Seriously, everyone knows the theory, be it applied to garages and
tools, kitchen equipment or shedsful of spades, chainsaws and lawn
mowers.

But it doesn't work. The whole issue of not finding stuff is only a
thing if you haven't remembered or bothered to put it back where it
ought to be. No amount of "It's an x-type thingy so it'll be in the
general area of other x-type thingies" will be of any use at all if
you haven't put it back in the x-type thingy zone.

At one point in the past we were moving house approximately every
eighteen months, so I developed the habit of keeping boxes with the
internal polystyrene or other packaging for various bits of kit,
kitchen devices, stereo systems, TVs etc. for ease of transporting to
their new abode. Come the latest (and hopefully final) move I had a
garage full of boxes, probably a good 60% for which we no longer had
the original items, too small or specialised for the other stuff we
had. By the end of the clearout I had a reserved spot at the local
recycling centre.

Unfortunately, looking at the garage this morning, I seem to be
following the same path with all the new stuff we've bought.

I don't suppose there was an amazon firestick remote and a set of digital kitchen weighing scales in there as well ?

Two things that have mysteriously disappeared on Sunday, and a right PITA when you need to weigh out some pastrami dry cure that contains nitrates (PP#1).

Ah, so that's what "loser" means.
Maybe it's because I'm single and not distracted by others so can focus
on what needs to be done. Nah, I'd be more productive if that was true.
I think I can credit my grandmother. "Put it back where it belongs," was
one of her mantras.

Its a good plan - and one which I have devoted my whole life to
implementing - with mixed results.
My problem is that I have more than one 'home' so I have to have
sub-sets of everything for everything.
It used to be more of a problem before I retired when some things might
be 'at work' - or (more likely) some work things might be 'at home' - or
one of them - IYSWIM?
