<https://ubuntu.com/blog/ubuntu-22-04-lts-released>

Runs very nicely on my Intel Mac. I’ve installed it to an SSD attached to a
USB port. It would make a good alternative to macOS especially on some
older slower Macs but need to check the specs first.

The next step is to build a VM using the equivalent ARM iso under Parallels
on my M1 machine. VMs using an older Ubuntu arm server iso ran like a
rocket! It should also be possible to create a VM using UTM (and QEMU on
which it’s based).

I'm currently running Linux Mint on my old Apple iMac (2006 24 inch)

Would this new version of Ubuntu run on it?

Advice welcomed.

I did like ElementaryOS when I tried it on a 2012 MBA. The only downside
was battery life suffered somewhat.

No. This was... a year ago or more. Think I only tried it as the MBA
('spares or repair') wouldnd't sleep (the only fault). Fixed that with
a motherboard swap, so eOS wasnt needed.

Yes it must be at least a year since I last used it. Based on
Ubuntu like several other distros. I had a motherboard failure with a
2013 MBA - might have been an issue with that era of MBAs!

Ah! that reminded me... the main issues was runaway CPU usage from
kernel_task. Had to delete a kext to stop it, but it wasn't ideal. That
plus the sleep issue... Anyway, it's ok now. It's one of the 11" MBAs.
Liked the form factor a lot so picked up a second one (2011) for cheap.
That's sitting in a cupboard as 'backup' (these were supposed to be
dedicated writing machines, but there hasn't been a lot of that going
on!)

There are lots of M1 support limitations though. No M1 desktop Ubuntu for a
start, while I've run into some issues with Multipass that I haven't yet got
to the bottom of.

I'm not familiar with Multipass and perhaps, not being a developer, I should
not "play" with it on my Intel Mac. (Well at least until I've RTFM ;) )

On my M1 Mac I've created a usable VM from scratch on my M1 Mac under UTM
<https://mac.getutm.app/> using the latest daily desktop ARM build ISO.
Note that I did create a VM under Parallels some weeks ago which I will
initially just update rather than create afresh using the latest daily ISO.

It's not going to do any harm. Mind you something gobbled up 64GB of free disk
space the other day before relinquishing it, and Multipass was one of the
things running...

As for the FM, that's one thing that should be getting better.

Yes. Usual Gnome desktop with left side bar. I’ve also now updated Ubuntu
in my Parallels ARM VM and installed the KDE Plasma desktop environment.

When you say no M1 desktop Ubuntu, do you just mean there's no install ISO
for ubuntu-22.04-desktop-arm64? If you install the server version in a VM, you
should be able to install the 'ubuntu-desktop' package and it will install
all the desktop environment.

If you want a UI for that, install the 'tasksel' package and run 'tasksel' -
it'll give you options to install bundles like 'Ubuntu desktop' or
'Publishing applications'.

UTM also works fine if you don't have Parallels - it uses QEMU, but for
arm-on-arm it hooks into the MacOS hypervisor framework so should be
equivalently speedy. It'll also do x86-on-arm, more slowly. If you really
want to run Windows XP on M1, UTM is the way to do it.

Click on Current and scroll down. You’ll see an ARM Desktop ISO link. I
used an earlier one a couple of days ago to create a UTM VM.

That's a relatively new addition. I've got an Ubuntu 18.04 and a 20.04
install that I did like Theo.

Great to see a standard desktop iso for arm64.

Running a VM in Parallels on my M1 machine now. It comes with the
stndard Gnome desktop but as Theo points out you should be able
to use tasksel to install other environments. When you install
Parallels Tools, run the CLI installer as the GUI version seems
to forget it needs to download a couple of config files before
proceeding!

But there is not currently any way to have it run natively on M1 - unless I am
behind the bleeding edge of progress, which happens more often these days. For
example, is dual-booting an M1 machine a possibility yet?

Thanks, but I'm happy with UTM and I also prefer Xubuntu so may try the
tasksel option.

There is a Debian install, but no vanilla Ubuntu as yet. There is however
Pop!_OS, which is based on Ubuntu.

Alternatively, run the supported Arch and then run Ubuntu in a chroot /
container?

There’s now a fair number of desktop environments you can install and it’s
easy to switch between them. I quite like KDE Plasma but will try more when
time permits.

UTM is excellent especially as it is free! My Parallels sub runs out in a
few months so may not bother renewing.

I'm trying UTM right now.

I installed ubuntu-22.04-live-server-arm64 from the ISO, and got the server
installation up and running.

Then I installed ubuntu-desktop and rebooted - but immediately I log in to the
desktop environment it sends me back to the login screen. I'm assuming it's a
case of something I've botched along the way.

Hmm, I did have some problems using UTM with a pre-existing VM where I'd get
a black screen after it had booted. I think I fixed that by fiddling with
the graphics settings in UTM - one kind of virtual graphics card was better
than another. To be able to make changes to the VM I'd have to restart in
console mode, make the change and then reboot back into graphics mode.

Perhaps try fiddling with the different graphics options UTM offers?

Worth having a look here in case anyone has a similar problem:
