Cool:-)
Bloke I used to work with at Ford in the early 80's was ex RAAF, he was
in avionics so he worked on the Neptunes.
He told me about the start up procedure for the jets, apparently they
weren't easy to start and the standing order was if they didn't start on
the second attempt they had to exit the aircraft asap and run as quickly
as possible away from the aircraft because the risk of an explosion was
very high.

The jets are unusual in that they run on 130RON AvGas rather than kerro.
Otherwise they'd need an extra fuel tank for them. They were only used
for takeoff as they used rather a lot of fuel although when they were
using the MAD system to look for subs they'd have to drop down to about
50', and they'd open the doors on the front of the jet pods so that the
jets would windmill. That was so that, if they lost a piston engine, the
jets could be started instantly, they also had them idling on landing in
case they needed to do a go-around.

We're prettying up the one jet that we have with a view to placing it
back in one of the pods.

It's a pity that there is no sound on the video, the radials sound great
starting up.

BTW the jets are the same as the one Ken Warby used to get the world
water speed record, in fact all 3 that he had came off RAAF Neptunes.

And that RAAF apprentices did all the jet engine work for Ken.

But tell me, where did Ken get his 130RON fuel from ?
The RAAF kids simply pinched it ??

FYI

what he did on Blowering Dam with that plywood, toy looking, garage made boat is the stuff of legends.

I think he said that's why they could be dangerous, if they didn't fire
up straight away there were a lot of fumes in the air that could easily
ignite.

Know what you mean, I've watched lots of aircraft videos and radials
sound amazing.
Probably heard a few start at RAAF air shows when I was a kid but too
long ago to remember much detail.

He started off using the techs at 10 squadron at Richmond until the CO
got jack of his men not working on the aircraft. The CO arranged for the
Wagga apprentices to do it instead, a win win for all

I don't know whether he ran it on AvGas or kerosene (it would work on
either) but I do know that Shell was one of his sponsors.

I met him a couple of times, I originally thought that he was an idiot,
but when I got to know him a bit I realised that he had thought the
whole thing through pretty well.

Stocky little guy with a ton of of confidence.
Definitely a major celebrity round that place.
