It is good that at least it finished and he got to enjoy it for a
short while. But yes, sad it was so short.

I have two theories, one benign, one malignant.

The benign one is that the SWs are having a private competition between
themselves to see who can slip the most ludicrous storyline past the editor.

The malignant one is that since RobGate failed to sink The Archers the
edict has gone out to make the stories as fatuous or as boring as
possible in hope that audience figures will plummet and R4 can regain 90
minutes of its schedule for other purposes.

Yeah, they need that 90 minutes for one or three programmes that are only
being repeated the once (ie. Broadcast just twice in one week) so that they
can p*ss us off even more - and I hear there is another round of cuts on
the way… And if they promote ‘sounds’ many more times in a day, I think I
shall stop listening at all! I pity the poor sods who used to write for
them in the past as they are surely getting very little work these days.

The sounds podcasts were very annoying this week as at the end of each
was an advert for ..forget what :) But it was the same daily. I began
rushing to turn it off at the end.

Micheal Mosely advertising his programme and books?

If you share my (un)sleep patterns then you will probably already know
that quite a lot of duplicated and triplicated material on Radio 4
started its life on the World Service. So: quadruplicated and quinted,
then.

This, and any similar
"buy right now or..."
suggestion would win a quick visit to the egress at our house.

We had a few who did exactly the same thing, paying off what they owed, in
cash, before officially going bust. Then there was the lovely guy (from
whom I have subsequently bought several used cars over the years) who would
turn up to pay off his brother's debts when his latest bright idea failed
and he went bust again.

We also did work for a handful of big businesses, none of which paid
promptly, always needed nagging a couple of weeks after the statement went
out. They were balanced to some extent, when cash-flow was at its worst, by
one customer who would happily put in a large pre-paid order for stationery
or similar when we didn't have enough in the bank to pay the staff at the
end of the month.

I was fine with kitchens. But sadly not so good with double glazing.
I think I made a sensible choice when I got it done...

When living at our previous address (very close to what is now known as the
A3290) we had sound reducing secondary glazing fitted on all the windows
facing the noisy road; subsequently, I had double glazing fitted to replace
the outer single glazed component. When walking around Reading Show soon
after this work had been completed, an optimistic salesman stood out in
front of us and said ‘Tell me Sir, how many of your windows are double
glazed?’ My reply ‘Err… not many, most are triple glazed.’ Luckless
salesman stood back and we walked on.

There still seems to be a trickle of salesmen knocking on doors
(1) who reckon that my old double glazing could be replaced with
the latest specification and offer me a payback. I am not
convinced, even at current energy prices, and an optimistic
projection on my lifetime, that this could be achieved.

(1) Oblivious to the notice discouraging cold callers, which I
point out is intended to save us both time. Some even profess not
to understand the concept.
