He's stopped 'talking' about it running to his bunker as well.

Planning permission, building inspectors, notification to neighbours of
works, insurance against damage to neighbouring properties? Neighbour
from hell?

At one point he demonstrates a hollow behind a steel wall. Collapse of
ground leading to a neighbours house falling down.

What child did not dream about digging down to Australia. Most of us
grew up before we had the potential to do harm.

I thought that was him! I'd hate to have him as a neighbour, it'd
be like taking a flat in Ankh Morpork above the Alchemist's Guild.

I suspect he'll unmolish himself spectacularly before growing up,
I'm surprised he hasn't already.

I had a network of tunnels at the bottom of the (admittedly quite large)
garding when I were a teenager: but nothing quite so technical. the only
metal involved was a number of bedframes.

I have seen arguments where the standard advice seemed to offer an
alternative possibility - "When you're in a hole, announce that you're
going to discover Australia"

The reply to that is "Go on then", and then pointedly stand and watch
saying "I love work, I can watch it for hours and hours". You could even
put on the foreman's bowler hat, excusing you from helping out.

The alternative is, when you realise that you are in a hole, to stop
digging, except perhaps to mangle a staircase out of the hole.

Did your parents notice when they went to bed?

When I was a kid, during a family trip to Ainsdale beach my father came
to look for us. He found the three of us busily attempting to tunnel
into the side of a sand dune. Fortunately we had not get very far.
Instead of helping us, the mining engineer in him stepped in. We were
dragged away and he then collapsed the tunnel. At the time I thought he
was a spoil sport; since then I have seem more than one news report of
children dying in collapsed sand tunnels.

Irish soldier that served in Cyprus as peacekeeper told me of a Turkish
man with grapeorchard on the wrong side of the line, and who had dug a
trench from his house to to it, must be twenty years ago or more.

Sometime back in the 80s there was somebody who lived about two furlongs
from me who excavated a cellar under his council house, using a bedframe
to prevent the whole lot falling on his head. There were Distinct
Repercussions when this was discovered.

I've always been fascinated by tunnels.

Old canal and railway tunnels are great, but the ex WD tunnels under
Dover's white cliffs, and the first attempts at a channel tunnel would
be worth an exploration.... if only I could walk.
