The proposal is being made to review the price cap on energy on a
three-monthly basis now; it was stated that this means ‘if the price drops,
we would benefit sooner’. Harrumph! As we have also been told that the
price is likely to rise and rise, (no mention of a drop) ISTMT, all that
will happen is we will get clobbered by increases twice as frequently!

I don't think it's being done for our benefit, Mike. If they go ahead
with the proposal there's a chance that, whilst sacrificing a few
thousand more households who can't pay their bills, they may save a
couple more energy companies from going under and avoid lumbering the
taxpayer with the associated costs. IMO, of course.

It's obvious from the way that retail prices change that expensive
energy travels very fast but cheaper energy takes ages to reach the
consumer. Given this basic law of physics, changing the price cap more
frequently isn't likely to help consumers.

(And anyway, it's a price *cap*. There's nothing to stop energy
companies charging less than the cap if wholesale prices come down.
Well, I say nothing. Greed, perhaps.)

I agree, any suggestion of price drops looks like being pie in the sky
at the moment; however, I think it's a good idea - (a) the changes won't
be quite as much of a shock, and (b) if the companies are forced to sell
at below cost price for long periods, more of them will go under (not
that I have much sympathy for energy companies, but the messing about
customers of the ones that do fail are subject to is a pain).
