I've got Thunderbird looking at ES on t'new 'puter, but I can't see a
list of newsgroups anywhere. Any clues?

On mine, click on the server name in the left hand pane, this should
open a pane on the right hand side, it shoujld show "manage newsgroup
subscriptions". Click on that, and it opens a window which will,
eventually, download a list of groups that are available on the swerver
and let you select what you want. If you have not logged in, it will ask
you for your details.

Make sure "always request authentication when connecting" is checked in
server settings for the ES account.
Click "refresh" in manage newsgroup subscriptions.

It was a struggle unforgetting my ES password. Even now I'm not sure
which one jbexed. But it's very posh having ye shedd on my stop dek as
well as a loptap.
