And it's always useful with XLR connectors to remember that

I never knew that - but judging by some of the responses to this
comment, maybe I need to not remember this?

Cal the bliddy thing a "Plocket" and have done with the whole sorry mess.

(I recall connectors which contained both 'pins' and 'sockets' within
the same connector body.)

What? The signal flows from your amp into the microphones? There's
novel. The microphone sitting on my desk has pins which definitely point
in the direction that the signal goes (ie. towards the amp).

Correct. Unless it's a chassis bit with pins (output from an amp - pins
pointing outwards so it's output) like my examples.

Seems an incredibly dangerous thing to do, especially as Bulgin
connectors were around before IEC.
