How much would it cost, roughly, to put cruise control into a 2001 Honda
Civic, and would this be a feasible thing to do?

it's not feasible to retro fit cruise control to any car afaik because
it's something that needs to be integrated into the design and
manufacture of the vehicle. and why would you want to spend money doing
such a thing on a 20 yo car anyway even if it were possible?

Nope, plenty of aftermarket kits available and I have fitted plenty. On
more modern systems it can be as simple as enabling it in firmware (or
flashing it to enable it) and adding a switch.

Why not?
The kits aren't all that expensive. You may or may not be able to fit it
yourself depending on the kit and/or your skill level.

One reason why I don't go on trips to the country is because my car does
not have cruise control. I am too worried about getting caught by speed
traps.

If it were a cheap thing to install, I think it would be a good idea. I
don't drive enough to justify buying a new car.

Just drive 20k's under the limit like every other old fart.

Though I doubt you are serious about this, but you can get a quote from
a couple of auto-sparkies for supply and fit.

interesting. so how do they work then, how do they control the speed of
the car?

since there's no cruise controls in the vehicle, since it wasn't
originally fitted, how do you now operate/control it?

sure, if they're not costly

Using the controls supplied with the kit or in the case of OEM upgrade
the controls for the vehicle that came with the models that had cruise
control.

**I don't know your specific model, but most modern cars use a
'drive-by-wire' system and an electronic speedo. In that sense fitting
cruise control is MUCH easier than in older cars, where mechanical
linkages were used for throttle and speedo. I would expect your car is
of the modern variety. My 2001 Nissan uses modern electronic systems for
everything, including speedo and throttle. Although it is not fitted
with cruise control (illegal in Japan and mine is a direct import), I'm
informed that all the wiring in in the loom.

Cost? No idea. I should think around $500.00 or less for an outboard unit.

Price varies depending on the make model of car and the model CC you buy.
$500 is a bit low.
https://www.streetsoundvision.com.au/command-cruise-control-ap900-fully-installed-into
For an old car like a 2001 Civic you would only need the basic CC which
costs under $400 but it could easily cost the same again to install so
closer to $800.00 installed.

Easier for the manufacturer when the car is being put together. Not
necessarily easier to do retrospectively.

It's 21 years old Trevor. Don't bet on it.

It often is, but whether that's of any benefit to the car owner would
depend entirely on the availability of a suitable kit to plug into it.

> Cost? No idea. I should think around $500.00 or less for an outboard unit.

What's an outboard unit? Something you stick on a boat? :)

500 bucks might do you an older style vacuum operated after-market kit,
but for a "modern" car with a DBW throttle it'll be a little more
expensive. Unless you can find a new old stock "accessory" kit that was
made specifically for the car then a generic DBW kit will prolly run you
a grand or more fully installed.

From what I found on Google Civic's had throttle cables up to 2005 so
it would need an older style CC.

That's the problem with a job like that if you have to pay someone to
install it, the installation could cost more than the CC.
I've installed 3 aftermarket CC's and the job is time consuming.

That would certainly make it cheaper to buy the kit. Vacuum servo kits
can be had for he proposed 500 buck fee, but fitting would most likely
cost all of that again and probably more.

Time consuming for a dunny cleaner, not so for an auto sparky. They are
generally very easy to fit.

Surprising that they use a different clockspring for the sans cc model.
Doesn't seem sensible to have 2 different clocksprings for the one car
model nor does it seem sensible to have to change it out when upgrading
to cc, especially when it seems all the control features are built into
the EMS and already in the car.

Yep. You still need the stalk but they can be had for as low as $20 as
well depending on model.
