My HP Z620 is fitted with 1 x external USB3 hard drive, Transcend case and
a WDC WD40NPZZ-00PDPT0 4000.7 GB disk, 5,400 RPM slow and steady. This is
my "grab it and run" drive in the event of a fire.

I thought the noise from the machine was the fans in my Icy Box 4 bay hot
swap bay but no it's the external drive that just doesn't stop chattering.
I have turned off indexing but it's still doing it.

It's not the end of the world but it is a nuisance, any suggestions as to
what might be causing it? It backs up overnight using SmartSync Pro so
it's not on a continuous backup.

Thanks.

Resource Monitor would be my choice of MS tool to find what process is
actively accessing hard drives, though if you wanna use filters then
SysInternals Process Explorer would do as well.

Some drives go noisy as they deteriorate. If you don't use a SMART monitor,
it's worth getting one. They've been a lifesaver several times, as they've
flagged up drives which are going West early enough to get everything off them
in time. I prefer HDSentinel - inexpensive, and the "Family" license is good
value for 5 licenses.

Meant to add that this does work over a USB3 connection.

Just checking.
Would that be head thrashing as spare tracks at one edge of the disks are
used to replace failing tracks?
A long time since I looked at this stuff.

Cheers

Just to say thank you for all the replies :-)

The chattering has stopped, the power of this group! I will follow up the
suggestions if it starts again. Windows was indexing all the drives, not
necessary as all but one are backups, perhaps turning it off helped but it
took a while for it to work through?
