Usage has regularised the change, just as 'sophistacated' used to mean,
and properly still does, the exact opposite of what is usually meant by
the user. There are plenty of examples of this drift caused by misusage,
including 'artificial', which began its life meaning very clever from
the root 'artifice'...

OK?

Hash was being used in the early 70s (well, it was being used a long
time before that, but I mean the use of the word as a synonym for
octothorpe), and that's just when I encountered it. I've never heard it
termed "hatch".

Having done a bit more research now, it does look like hash appeared in
the 1970s, but octothorpe is even more recent.

I have heard of people going for a "slatch", though.

I noticed that a criminal was said to be involved in artifice the other day,
why do we tend to bend words? I'm assuming this is deliberately misleading.

That is no doubt how politicians say they are innocent when they are clearly
guilty of misleading people.

Its not just politicians. its a kind of psychology. Like the phrase up to,
sounds better than capped at, or average is. Download speeds still seem to
be being given as up to.

I mean 1 bit a second is still up to 300kbits sec.
I notice, for example that at lunch times an internet dongle normally quite
fast can slow down to a crawl for minutes at a time, while at other times it
zooms along.

Lawyers are another source of gibberish that can mean everything. and
nothing. Terms and conditions of services are really terrible for this. I
tried to open a twitter account this morning. I lost interest after 10
minutes of being asked to select interests geographical areas and goodness
knows what else, and on one list I had to select three or it would not let
me carry on, I was only interested in one of them.

There was an interesting dialogue in a repeat of 'Yes Prime Minsiter'
this week, where PM Jim Hacker gives a lesson in answering press
questions to Bernard, his Principle Private Secretary.

Basically it was "Work out what you want to say first, and whatever the
question, say it.

Begin with, 'The real question is...' or 'It would not be right for me
to comment on that directly, but I will say this.....' etc."

More recently "The Public doesn't care about that, what The Public wants

The books are well worth reading - there's a fair few footnotes on where
the truth and fiction collided.
