A friend - a non-biker - is thinking about buying a nice hour a mile from Snetterton. He is thinking about the noise when the track is in use. Will it be noticeable at that distance?

On the flip side, I have told him that if he buys it, I might well keep a motorbike there and visit reasonably often. Bafflingly, he thinks of this as a positive.

Hard to say without seeing the results of any noise surveys and exact
location, plus topography map. A Statutory notice was served back in
2007 and there is a noise management plan in force as a result, which
suggests that there have been 'issues'.

http://democracy.breckland.gov.uk/mgConvert2PDF.aspx?ID=2248
https://www.snetterton.co.uk/media/5044331/Snetterton%20Noise%20Management%20Plan%202016.pdf

For bonus points, looks like a poultry farm at Shropham has been causing
enough noise to justify a recent (October 2020) BS4142 assessment. 24
hour operation with tonal noise sources (chillers). I wouldn't buy a
house near that.

I live 3-4 miles down wind of Donnington Park. Its easy to know when
there is an m/c event on of some sort - despite 8 lanes of motorway and
east Midlands airport in between!

I can't say that it bothers me - but that's just me :-)

All sorts of things to consider, is the event a silenced event, which way is the wind blowing, frequency of events.

I would suggest taking a drive up there (if they're not on your side of the pond) on an event day and having a listen.

How much is an hour these days? Does he get discount for buying multiple?

if the house is on the open market then Zoopla shows the nearest properties
to the south in East Harling. There seems to be a large mature wood
screening the village from the circuit. It's labelled as a Common and
"heritage preservation" so isn't going anywhere soon.

To the north of the circuit is the A11 dual carriageway which will surely
be more of a noise nuisance as it will be every day?

Yes, I have too much time on my hands. I'm off work all week and it's
raining.

£8.91 minimum, but then he wants a /nice/ hour, so who knows.

Wind important, but tree cover less so, unless very dense planted
evergreens of significant height and of sufficient 'breadth' of planted
area.

After sheer distance - significant screening by an embankment, large
buildings or intervening 'high ground' [1] are more effective.

The report on noise levels at the poultry plant I found made interesting
reading.

"Residual noise was variable with the main source direct traffic. Of
interest was significant noise contributions from military aircraft
based at the RAF Lakenheath during the week day periods and Snetterton
Race Circuit, especially during the weekend day periods where this
source dominated."

The plant is 4 kms from the circuit.

It all depends on what you mean by 'noticeable'. A noise that is
inaudible (not literally perhaps, but by a measured dB(A) SPL source
on/off comparison) is probably not noticeable. A noticeable noise may
not always be aversive. So much depends on the context and the
circumstances of the 'receiver'. Situational and attitudinal aspects of
aversion to noise - much discussed by the geeks who go to Institute of
Acoustics conferences.

Only really one way to find out. The next bike trackday at Snetterton (102dB) is the 13th of March. The next car day (105dB) is tomorrow. He might as well pop along to where the house is for a quick listen, though it'll the wind direction is a bit funny at the moment. Completely opposite to normal.

Snetterton is surrounded by embankments now, for precisely that reason. Has been for ages.

That's right trees don't do much to attenuate noise but something solid
like the embankment mentioned would.

Depends where the bank is relative to the noise and the listener. If
it's between lughole and loud thing, with a good 'path difference' then
they achieve decent reduction in that direction. Could make it worse in
the other, depending on the profile.

Problem usually is providing one high enough and close enough to either
source or receiver to give a good 'shadow'. Gets complicated depending
on single/multiple source and noise frequency. Calculating the effect
has become so much easier than it used to be since these computer things
were invented.
