BBC Look North anchor Peter Levy admitted he had "very little defence" after members of a Hull-based environmental group called on him to walk to work rather than driving his car.

The popular broadcaster recently admitted on TV to driving "less than a mile" to work. It prompted Friends of the Earth Hull to encourage him to "lead behaviour" be switching to walking or cycling the short distance from his home to the BBC studios in Queens Gardens.

Writing on Twitter, Friends of the Earth Hull said "it would make a good piece on Look North" for the presenter to switch from his car. The group added: "Many journeys are short enough to walk or cycle and it would have a huge impact on congestion also benefiting those who need to drive. As a local media figure Peter is well placed to lead behaviour."

Peter Levy said he "totally" agreed with the sentiments, adding "I have very little defence". Responding to the suggestion it would make a good piece on Look North, he added: "You're not wrong."

Hull City Council has encouraged people who commute to work to swap the car for walking, cycling or public transport at least one day a week. The council has also extended a £90,000-a-year agreement with Halfords to help council staff get on their bikes to work.

In addition, the council has hired local cycle charity R-evolution to set up bike libraries for people to rent free bikes in Hull city centre.

Peter is a well-known resident of the Victoria Dock area of Hull, just outside the city centre. If the broadcaster swapped to cycling to work for a year, he could save as much as 53kg of carbon emissions, according to Cycle Scheme UK's carbon emissions calculator.

One user of Twitter summed up the advantages of walking or cycling, telling Peter: "Much better for your health, the environment and your pocket." The presenter replied: "You are so right Stevie."

They ARE wrong and he should not let them bully him.

It's up to him how he travels.

Not up to them or any other bunch of eco-loonies / fairy-cyclists.

Peter... Buy a double decker bus and drive that to work.. Pain to get it on the drive at home but on the plus side, you can use the bus lanes and you can also park right outside Primark to get your shirts..
