There is of course the 'flashing amber' at pedestrain crossings - which
means you 'may proceed if there is no one (left) on the crossing'.

Previously (briefly - about a year?) there was a situation where "White
'X' means go!" on such crossings.
My father proclaimed it 'Bloody stupid" and "Why not just use green?"
And so it came to pass...

Sorry. I don't believe that.
How can they possibly see what the lights say when they are coming the
wrong way down that one-way street?

My personal hate is cyclists who have their earplugs in while cycling
along. Most modern cyclists are self-admiring pains. Older people sit on
their bikes in an upright stance, which, AFAIRemember the norm in the
Netherlands.

A few days ago passed an adult cyclist dressed in lurid lycra on an
obviously very expensive bike - I had to wait and give them the whole lane
because they were wobbling horribly every time their head turned and
wavering across the lane anyway. Shortly afterwards I passed a child of
about 6 on a bicycle in normal clothes (apart from the helmet), I gave them
the lane as well but I could have passed safely without crossing the line.
The child was rock solid stable even while looking and while signalling
(something the adults in lycra *never* do IME) and following the left side
of the road at about a foot from the kerb with not the slightest weave.

The child was cycling properly as I was taught and tested on as a
child before I was allowed to cycle to school.

Bring back the cycling proficiency test.

Traditional Dutch bikes pretty much force it.

Bristols usually come in pairs.

I feel I ought to speak up for sensible cyclists here, as I consider myself to be one. (Some) car drivers get incensed at cyclists because they are stuck in traffic whilst the cyclist gets there before them, so fell need to blanket condemn all cyclists with the minor offense of some, and not look at the danger they themselves pose to other road users. Enough?

I only get incensed at cyclists who seem to think that stop signs and
lights don't apply to them. I will give them room and pass them
carefully... but when one dares me not to hit him when he's doing
something illegal, I'm tempted.

There are good and bad in all walks, sorry cycles of society.

I have no problem at all with well behaved cyclists using their machine
to get from A-B.

But I firmly believe that those using them as exercise machines, for
racing, posing and basically showing off should be restricted to cycle
race-courses, off public roads, off pavements and paths, and certainly
off canal towpaths.

Local man of a very respectable family was in a midlife crises, and
wearing that tight plasticy outfit, would ride his cycle up and down the
street, pausing at the traffic lights to stretch. The police could not
persuaded him against, so someone filmed him at that and forced him to
look at it.

I don't wear any of *that* , I'm a proper cyclist. (OK I need to replace the front mudguard).

Much appreciate the 'will slow down if I have to' bit.

It's those who don't that deserve a ducking.

Much of the problem is that SUSTRANS have paid for the upgrading of many
towing paths into cycle tracks, and then the cyclists think it's all
theirs, and boaters, their kids and dogs, should get out of their way.

(Some) car drivers get incensed at cyclists because they are stuck in traffic whilst the cyclist gets there before them, so fell need to blanket condemn all cyclists with the minor offense of some, and not look at the danger they themselves pose to other road users. Enough?

I ought to apologise for my remarks. I'm afraid I'm one to go for the
cheap, stereotypical gag over journalistic accuracy when given half a
chance: consequences of spending too much time in a (different)
newsgroup where extra points are awarded for bad taste.

I was a cyclist until my knees gave out. I hope I was a good one but I
also hope that allows me to make cycling jokes at my own expense.

And we're told that it's "politics" that we shouldn't talk about because
it makes trouble ...

"_People_ who think everybody else should get out of their way", surely?
Not all cyclists are such people, not all such people are cyclists.
It's a separate category.

Personally, I am a pedestrian, a cyclist, a biker and a car-driver; all
at once, even when I'm sitting at a computer. Thus, I know that all of
those are Nice People.

I am not, nor have I ever been, a jogger. Therefore it must be Their Fault,
whatever it is.

'Barely Maintained' applies to the whole of the waterway system now ever
since a previous government decided that they weren't theirs to maintain
anymore.

I'm sure you are a 'will slow down if I have to' cyclist, pedestrian,
biker and car-driver Richard. I was too, but you could add PSV & HGV
driver to that too. Sadly now that is just car-driver due to bits not
jbexing.

It's the two-wheeled head-downers who don't slow down that are the
subject of the above (tongue-in-cheek) rant.

Like one of my scoolfellows, but you could add 'rash'. Head down,
pedalling like the clappers, he went head-first into a lamp post, and
that was the end of his career.

This was before the days of helmets (1950s), but even one of those might
not have saved him.

Yup, BTDT. When I were 16-ish, I think. Cycling home from scouts one night,
head down, flat out, and suddenly I was in the miggle of the road with the
remains of my bike round my neck and no idea where I was or why. Seems I'd
taken a high-speed bite out of the boot of a parked car. Lost me two front
teef. Gave the prunts quite a shock when I turned up in an ambulance, but I
don't recall much else.

The toofs were lost and gone forever - I do recall some extremely
uncomfortable dental surgery so I wasn't too pleased when a couple of year
ago the dentist announced that he was going to have to remove the caps and
drill out the stumps. But dental surgery has clearly come a long way in the
last half-century - it was no problem at all.
