Idly looking on line, as you do, I spotted this FJR for sale.
<https://www.cmcbikes.com/used-motorcycle/2018-yamaha-fjr1300-as-for-sale-61e7d986e5ca1>

Start flicking through the slides...

Front view - all looks fine.
<https://www.cmcbikes.com/img/bikes/61e6945f603198.84560272-61e6ac3cc0407.jpg?zoomable=1>

Alternate front view - hmmm
<https://www.cmcbikes.com/img/bikes/61e6945f603198.84560272-61e6ac09c8fd8.jpg?zoomable=1>

Is that an optical illusion or is the headlamp inner broken?

Not sure, but seems a bit unlikely - whre would something penetrate?

Maybe the lights are different: left for dip or dip/main and right for
main, perhaps?

Surely at the change of ownership, it would obviously pass code or not.

There's no inspection in the first three years following registration, after that
bikes are subject to an annual inspection (until they're 40 or so years old
then you can run any wreck...). There's no inspection on sale in the UK.

Didn't mean to imply there was. I meant the buyer could see if it was in
an acceptable condition before he handed over the money.

people seem to order them to be delivered based on seeing a picture, just
like pizza only the delivery vehicle is larger

Johan (South African with us in La Bourboule) has just bought an 8000
R1200RS from a dealer in Malvern based on me checking the photos and
comparing to my RS. Delivered to Kent.

Could be an optical illusion. I'd be more concerned why a 2018 plate
bike has the pre-2016 rear lights. Also, I hated the automatic gearbox
on the AS model I rode a few times.

I bought my two year old XT660 Tenere based on an emailed picture and a
phone conversation.

It was in Inverness and I was in Hove. One sleeper journey later I
handed over the cash in the buffet on Inverness station and rode it
home.

Turns out, it's quite a long way.

When I used to frequent the FJR forums soon after getting my 2007,
the general consensus regarding the AE model (what they call it
over here) was 'don't knock it till you've tried it'. I suspect I
wouldn't care for it, not necessarily for the electric gear change,
but for the loss of manual control of the clutch.

But I've never had a go on one myself. IIRC I did have a ride on a
Gen3 with the normal gearbox, and while the cruise control and other
improvements would be nice, there's really nothing there that would
drive me toward chopping in my Gen2 for one.

The hullaballoo about getting a sixth gear on the Gen3 has always
amused me. If there's any bike in the world that _doesn't_ need a
sixth gear, it's the Gen2 FJR.

That was my biggest criticism - difficulty at very low speeds.

Oh, I wouldn't _mind_ having the engine spin a bit slower at cruise.
I've always liked to run at the lowest feasible RPM, without lugging,
of course. But I find that 5th on mine is just fine, and I like to
think only having 5 cogs allows each one to be slightly wider (and
this stronger) than 6. Perhaps I'm rationalizing a bit too much.

That's a fair point, given that all the six-speeds were recalled! The
assumption was that, in deciding to add a sixth cog to the exisiting
spindle by narrowing the existing cog(s), second gear proved to be too
weak.

Good spot on the rear lights. Home/unofficial dealer repair job perhaps?

Dunno. I'd have a look at my headlights as well, to see how they
compare, but the bike is down south somewhere being repaired. Caveat
emptor, anyway.
