I very rarely dust.

The X^2 used to say, "What's the point? It just comes back and then it
only gets to a certain level and just stays stay there".

So who dusts?

Just asking, as a visitor here remarked that my flat was dusty.

I replied, "So".

They won't be back.

(I do clean the bathroom though.)

Me (not as often as I would like sadly).

Like it's a badge of honor, to have a mucky house .
If you could see what 'dust' was made of(no it's not mostly discarded
skin cells) you would remove it to.

Is that why asthma is so prevalent today (not just because it is over
diagnosed but because there is less air flow in Houses )people
insulating up the ting+-yang [1], and allowing dust to accumulate

[1] Back in my day (puffs pipe ) I remember ice on the inside of the
windows in the morning .

Remove it to where?

ISTR - well, IR reading/hearing somewhere of some attempt - or some
posit - that one should get a powerful fan to get the air in a room
whizzing roundandroundandround so all the dust is circulating, then
opening a door or widow to let it all out.

Didn't Shylock Humes complain when someone dusted his rooms so he
couldn't tell how long things had stood in their places, by the
thickness of the dust deposit?

But when it's lying on furniture it isn't doing any harm.

When it's dusted it flies around the room and you inhale it.

What we need is a mini vacuum cleaner/duster combination sucky tool.

Gissa grant.

Dragons Den here we come.

That could have a lot to do with it - a properly insulated house
pretty much needs mechanical ventilation (fans ... ok you can stop
cheering now) and that really should have a heat exchanger otherwise why
bother with the insulation. Do this right and you get a nice warm house with
fresh air everywhere, no condensation, no mould and very little dust. Stick
big carbon filters (the ones they sell to indoor growers) on the intake and
it even keeps out the smell of muck spreading in the surrounding fields
(still jbexing for that coming up on eight years now).

As the old joak goes:

"My wife left me last year. Until she went I had no idea how much she
used to do around the house. Change the beds, wash the clothes, hoover
the floors, put out the recycling, do the washing up, clean the
toilet.

Then blow me if you don't have to do it all over again six months
later."

But it takes very little energy - There was an article in the paper
a few weeks back about the difficulty a retired person was having with the
cost of heating their small flat in Dublin - I can understand their
difficulty it's costing them twice as much to heat their small flat badly
(leaving rooms unheated and none of it warm) as it does to heat this 240
square metre, six bedroom dormer to skin comfort everywhere all the time,
and I'm working on making the place cheaper to run before I retire. Throw
in my power bill (computers 24/7, cooking, lighting ...) and I'm almost up
to their heating costs.

Install decent draught proof windows, add forced ventilation with heat
exchangers, and you will save money on your heating bill. The heat
recovered vastly exceeds the power of the fans. It also helps in Summer
if you have air conditioning.

The only downsides are the capital and maintenance costs. The filters
don't clean themselves....

Tone, all I meant was like dusting , you'll just have to dust again so don't dust .
haircuts , you'll just have to get another one so just let it grow long
eating , you'll just have to eat again later so don't ever eat
I guess stuff like that
it doesn't make sense to me either

If you molish your own heat exchanger[1] and use easily replaced
long life active charcoal filters (made for a massively greater airflow)
then these problems become very small. As far as I'm concerned the filters
need changing when I smell the muck being spread in the field across the
road - eight years and counting still no smells. What with fans, ducting,
insulation, filters and making the core I spent well under five hundred
EUZU and put it all in myself.

The downside of doing it that way is that it won't be recognised by
the stuffed shirt doing a BER because it doesn't come from a registered
manufacturer with tested performance. Neither will the hundred sheets of
polyiso insulation board in the roof - because I put them in too making
sure they were properly sealed and the reveals were properly insulated and
not the normal air leaks. I don't care about the rating I get the benefit.

Commercial units use under spec components and cost way more than
they should - but when retrofitting that expense vanishes into invisibility
next to the labour cost for installation (even with an empty attic never
mind a warm roof like mine).

The time to put it in is at build - or full blown strip and refit
when it's easy to do and there's nothing in the way. That's also the time
to get the insulation and air tightness right (I didn't quite there's a
leak on one gable[3] that blows cold air into a kitchen cupboard - I'd have
to completely strip the end wall of the upstairs room to get at it - still
for a block built house it's tight).

[1] All you need is coroplast sheets and double sided polythene foam tape
and a stacking jig to make a mostly counterflow core (the tape goes in S
curves for top and bottom air entry and mostly horizontal flow) with *way*
more surface area than commercial units (when you use 38[2] sheets of
1mx0.5m for one side and the gaps between them for the other side). Box the
core up in two inch polyiso taking due care to separate the airflows and
provide suitably placed inlets and outlets - forming plenums helps.

[2] Let's not talk about the other two sheets - just remember the
importance of a good assembly jig shall we.

[3] The one that faces the prevailing nasty winds of course.

There should be a symbol (not cymbal) for 'tongue in cheek'.

I do dust very occasionally, usually to avoid getting nagged, just
before the X^4 arrives.

Depends: If there is a granite underlay under your house, insulating the
house can be a BAAD idea, get it checked for radon gas first. It is
believed that now, when tobacco usage is way down, radon gas kills more
people through lung cancer than anything else.

New builds have required a radon barrier and trap for quite a long
time now. Retrofitting to modern standards is unfortunately very difficult
and expensive but houses are still going up without the full deck
insulation and ventilation done properly.

Houses being too expensive to buy is an easier problem to solve
than houses being too expensive to live in.

The people who can't afford (can't afford rather than would like to pay

Yep, the worst off are the renters who cnl their own ovyyf. The
landlord has absolutely no incentive to put zbarl into making the place
energy efficient unless they can rack up the rent and the tenant isn't
going to want to put zbarl into the landlord's property even if they can
get permission. Along with the detail that most effective retro-fits are
way too disruptive to do with tenants in place so the obvious process is

1: Kick out the low rent tenants as fast as legally possible
2: Rip the place to shreds, insulate, ventilate, efficient heating ...
3: Tart it up to the latest fashion standards
4: Return to market at three to five times original rent

Or leave well alone and let the tenants put up with freezing,
baking, condensation or whatever other nasties the place has to offer nd
keep banking the rent. Tenant doesn't like it ? There's a queueueueue.

Yes, being poor is expensive.
