https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/kennethbachor/italy-battle-of-the-oranges

While people in UK are less fortunate than us and are forced to ration
their fruit and veggies, we Italians use our surplus oranges for a
stupid food fight.

And now some cynical bastard will say that those oranges are not good
for human consumption (and, true to be told, I wouldn't touch those
oranges with a bargepole) but I will reply that they would still be
better than those crap oranges at Waitrose or Marx & Sparx that your
middle class housewife will buy for £1.99 each.

This is unacceptable and sadistic. What has become of this world? The
Brits are human beings just like us.

Hmm, disappointing. I thought you were going to be apologising for invading us
in 43 AD or whenever it was.

Yes, when are they going to apologise for that crime?

And when are the Norwegians going to apologise for all those Viking raids?

And the bloody French for 1066!

Seems we're owed significant apologies from all over Europe.

So Spain will be cancelling their La Tomatina Festival this year then or
there will be outrage from the rest of the world!

The Normans were really vikings. Rollo was their founder, went on to later fame and
fortune with Rowntrees and Nestle.

There will not be a shortage of tomatoes grown outdoors in the correct
season. There may be a shortage of tomatoes grown in heated greenhouse
in Northern Europe during winter - or more to the point plants not
planted when energy prices to commercial growers were at their highest.

I wonder how much the media reporting has to do with shortages. Tell the
British public that there is a shortage of vegetable widgets and they
will go and buy as many vegetable widgets they can find irrespective
that they will be put in the food recycling bins or compost heap soon
afterwards because they have a short shelf life. Reported yesterday, a
shortage of raspberries - a very soft fruit out of season and doesn't
travel well and rarely seen in any supermarket in previous years at this
time of year :(

Don't forget the Dutch, burning our sodding fleet at Chatham in the 17th C.
Not much of a navy then, but I spose they'd had covid and brexit - err I mean
the plague and fire of Lonon, to contend with.

The horror.

Some of that stuff in the grocery store, lacks taste.

Picking your own, like we did as kids, was infinitely better.

Our cottage had five different types of wild berries, so there
was some choice there. There would be several distinct harvest
seasons (cranberry are late).

Wild raspberries are interesting, in that they grow in a narrow
band about 20-30 feet from paved road surfaces. If you walk
further into the woods, you'll find no more of them. Which makes
picking easy in the sense you can bicycle along a road and spot
patches of them from the road.

I've seen the most amazing (what seems to be) wild cranberry bog,
chock-a-block with fruit. Picked a couple liters in ten minutes.
This was right next to a provincial beach. It's funny how many
people at the beach, didn't know what they were. And naturally,
if they'd "taste tested" one, they would have moved on immediately.
But properly prepared, they're fine. They need to be soaked in
water overnight, to "drown the wildlife" :-) Cleaned, then cooked.
And that makes your cranberry sauce for thanksgiving turkey dinner.

I find that anything from France and to a lesser extent Italy and Spain
lacks taste. Fruit imported from South Africa seems to have a lot more
taste possibly because its only imported for a short time during their
picking season.

Soon we will be seeing large red Strawberries form Spain that are
COMPLETELY tasteless.

You get the freshness but if it's the variety that has been grown for
its looks rather than its taste then you are still wasting your time.

Where friends live there are walks beside what must have been allotments
many years ago and now have been re-purposed into a wildlife type
sanctuary. The raspberries that can be occasionally found there are
truly tasty. The raspberries my friends inherited (planted in the
garden by the previous occupant of the house) have large crops but are
somewhat bland and are not worth picking

Unfortunately these days too much fruit and veg are grown to have "class
1" looks rather than being nice to eat :(
