**It would be unlikely that such an artefact would be released from a

Phil is very comfortable with measurement equipment and it's correct use.

"It's" ?

And mine is the only measurement I have seen presented so far.

** Update:

Mr Latham did not make it clear if the issue only happens with a *DTS 5.1 decoder* in use.
Nor did he say which channel / s the offset appears in.
A DC offset has a polarity too.

Seems someone at Arcam did a test ( not further described ) and saw a long ( 400mS) sub sonic with a peak of 0.5V.
Too many " ifs " for me.

So on the one hand I told a story that was exactly as it happened
because it was relevant to a conversation taking place.

On the other hand for some unknown reason, I went to the trouble to
make up a fanciful tale and invented a senior engineer and his name
at Arcam and fabricated a note from him to back my story up.

For those cynical enough to think the second is true thanks very much
but I can assure you, your judgement is seriously impaired.

Bob.

I don't recall 14 years back, I just remember that at that time I
always used DTS if it was available.

I don't think I ever knew that, it may have been shown by which
channels tripped out but I can't remember.

> > Seems someone at Arcam did a test ( not further described )

I told you his name - Andy Dutton and his position of Senior
Engineer.

> > and saw a long ( 400mS) sub sonic with a peak of 0.5V. Too many "

In which case don't believe me.

I suppose just for the sake of clarity (I don't expect to be
believed) that I don't know what channel caused the issue. I don't
even know if it was the .1 channel because before about 2008, I
didn't have a sub woofer or a centre channel speaker, I had a 4.0
system using phantom mode so the .1 and the centre were merged into
the L/R fronts. It *may* be that not all channels on the P7 shut down
and a clue could have been obtained from that but it was around 17
years ago, I can't remember, convenient I know.

I'm no longer using the AV8 either (no HDMI) but the P7 is still in
use.

Bob.

It may be that they stuck 'earthquake effects' onto the '.1' part but
omitted that from the 'lesser' tracks. Simply to help 'sell' surround sound
to punters. Then over-did it because it seemed OK when they played it back
on their own system.

Handbrake or VLC. Handbrake is easier to use, albeit still can be a bit
difficult to suss out some settings needed for a given purpose.

I don't have a copy of that disc, either, but that just means I can't tell
independently. See no reason to doubt that Bob's system 'trips', so the
curio is what's on the disc.

I've realised that doing this is fraught with difficulties.

1. I don't use the AV8 any longer as it didn't have HDMI. Will my
current AV860 pass the DC in the same way from HDMI, digital is
digital but I don't know.

2. I don't know what channel to record and I only have The Arcam
engineer's comments to guide me where to look in time on the disc.

3. Working out how to use VLC to do this, I Presume Handbrake is
Linux.

4. Even if I turn up with a flac or wav file showing the DC, our
cousins down under will likely claim I've faked it, they have form.

I'll think about it.

Bob.

Not sure if it is relevant here but: Some years ago I used to use an Arcam
DVD player. This had a few odd quirks. One was that on a couple of DVDs a
specifc part of the audio would cause the following sound to develop a
'whistle' tone that only would end when the disc was ejected. Play the
section from just after when the whistle had started, no whistle. Seemed
that on some discs something about the audio caused this to start.

Other players didn't do it. Most discs didn't do it.

The player eventually developed a different fault, so I now use a different
player that can also do other things like BD, files on USB sticks, etc.
This works nicely.

So Bob's observed behaviour *might* be accurately reported, but assigns the
cause incorrectly.

Jim

I use it on Linux, but I've thought it was also available on Windows and
Macs. Someone else may know that!

Handbrake rips the disc. No hardware player needed. So you only need the
disc, not a player. What I don't know is if it can decode DTS as I've never
needed that. But it can be setup to convert audio into a flac audio track
or simply copy it across into a file. e.g. an .mkv file. Here it simply
copies out formats that mkv can hold, and converts other audio into flac.

Then ffmpeg is yer friend. :-) Just use it with '-acodec copy' into an
audio file of the correct format.

Handbrake is a lot easier to use for ripping than VLC. But in some cases
I've found VLC works when Handbrake can't read a disc or image. No idea
why.

But that would mean that either I had made up what the Arcam senior
engineer had said or he was part of a scam with a dodgy product. And
on just one place on one disc from a large selection.

I have downloaded and installed handbrake.

It scanned my DVD and looked at 9 sections and claimed - No valid
source or titles found.

Log contains these lines...

libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 6.0.1
libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.
libdvdread: Can't open F:\AUDIO_TS for reading
libdvdread: Device F:\AUDIO_TS inaccessible, CSS authentication not
available.
libdvdread:DVDOpenFilePath:findDVDFile /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO failed
libdvdread:DVDOpenFilePath:findDVDFile /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.BUP failed
libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO.
libdvdnav: vm: failed to read VIDEO_TS.IFO

[11:30:47] hb_stream_open: open F:\AUDIO_TS failed
[11:30:47] scan: unrecognized file type
[11:30:47] libhb: scan thread found 0 valid title(s)

The disc cover says -
This product carries a genuine hologram. The DVD is copy protected,
which prevents viewable copies being made.

Don't know if protection is the reason Handbrake doesn't seem to be
able to rip the disc but it seems likely to me.

It does play fine in VLC but I've not figured out how to save audio
channels (if it's just the video that is protected). I selected DTS
in the DVD menu.

Assuming Andy's timings were correct...

At 12:38 the dialogue "Seize your weapons and wait for the word"
At 13:39 A whistle.
At 12:40 the dialogue "Your orders sir"

Starts to get noisier at 12:50 canon fire at 13:09

All pretty quiet sound wise at the point Andy said he found the DC.
No drums or canons at all.

As I said this was many years ago but I do recall that the shutdown
came out of the blue with nothing loud or unusual audible at the time.

How do I extract the audio from the 5.1 channels with VLC?

Bob.

Right. My last attempt at convincing you lot. If this doesn't
convince you then you'll have to remain cynical and judge everyone by
your own standards, I'm done.

It turns out my memory was at fault slightly. The information from
Andy didn't come direct to me, it came from the Arcam section of AV
Forums. It doesn't appear that the website goes back to 2004 but I
found the thread on my hard drive.

You can read the whole thread at;

http://www.mightyoak.org.uk/kit/p7-thread.txt

I've learned I didn't even start the thread I'm in at number 4. Also
in context comments from John Dawsom Mr. Arcam himself and from Andy
Dutton.

Still don't believe me? Then you're idiots so why should I care.

Bob.

Fire up VLC
From the media menu choose Convert / Save
From either the file or disc menu, choose the source
Press Convert / Save at the bottom of the dialogue
Choose Audio - FLAC as a Profile
Provide a destination file name
Hit Start

That's it. You will get a stereo FLAC file with all the tracks
included

From the disc menu I select F:\ Master AND Commander

Up to that point I'm fine.

Can't find a way to do this. At this point I'm asked for:
Title 0
Chapter 0
Audio track -1
Subtitle track -1

> Provide a destination file name

I navigated to a folder and entered test.flac as the file name.

> Hit Start

Did that, movie plays but nothing is saved.

I wish.

I'll keep looking...

Bob.
