Great news!

Just as Snake Pass’ brief spell as a car-free cycling utopia begins to fade from the collective bike riding consciousness (ah, we had a good month, didn’t we?), another Peak District climb is set to take its place.

The A5004 Long Hill between Whaley Bridge and Buxton – named in 2010 as the seventh most dangerous road in Britain – is now closed to cars for up to five months, as major works are needed to repair a landslip.

In its usual state, according to Anthony from Peaks and Puddles (link is external), the 50mph A-road can be a sketchy experience for any cyclist, despite its use as a hill climb for local clubs (it even hosted the 2011 national hill climb championships).

But with barriers now blocking the 4.5 mile long, three-percent climb to motor vehicles – provided you take a detour around the landslip itself and keep an eye out for any drivers chancing their arm – cyclists can once again enjoy the serenity and safety of a Peak District road hitherto associated with speeding motorists, the sound of roaring engines, and general feelings of terror.

As Anthony, who rode the climb this week, says: “cycling heaven!”

Let’s just hope the council doesn’t get involved again…

Good point - it''s the same council - Derbyshire it seems.
There are no anti-cycling signs there at all this time though.

In that case, "the road" isn't closed.

It's just whatever short (though admittedly critical for through
traffic) section needs to be closed for the mentioned repair to be
effected which is closed.

It's happened in *this* road a few times now. It didn't affect me at all
apart from the reduction in (through) traffic.

The A5004 Long Hill between Whaley Bridge and Buxton – named in 2010 as the seventh most dangerous road in Britain – is now closed to cars for up to five months

It will lose its horrific title for five months - good result.

Well, not unless your "point" was that the road isn't closed (which it
cannot be).

Also the local residents will have cleaner air, safer streets and a quieter neighbourhood for a good while.
Good for them.

"streets"?

The road is 10 miles long.

It contains a surprisingly large number of residential properties and
other premises, as well as linking to various byways (some of them
cul-de-sacs) with access to residential and agricultural locations.

You can be fairly sure that even Derbyshire County Council will not
close off contact with the outside world for all those people.

It's only nutters like you who "think" it should be done.

There is, luckily, a way to avoid the landslip itself. As it’s just south of the first large lay-by leaving Whaley Bridge, the narrow (single track in places) Elnor Lane and Taxal View — a popular quieter cycle route into the Goyt Valley — provide a good work around.

Thankfully, with I think much encouragement from local councillor Ruth George, Derbyshire County Council have also planted a big set of concrete Lego blocks further up Long Hill, beside the big lay-by roughly half way up the climb on this side.

This means that Long Hill itself is firmly blocked as a through route to Buxton (except for bikes!), freeing Elnor Lane and Taxal View from becoming a truly nightmare rat run.

Hopefully this map makes more sense of things:
A suggested route from Whaley Bridge to the top of Long Hill is shown in green. Good off-road links are shown in pink. (Dashed means bumpier.)

The barrier blocks the road completely for most vehicles but there’s a perfect gap to cycle through: 1.2 metres surfaced or 1.5 metres absolute width including grass.
A lovely 1.5 metres block-to-block.

The landslip itself is, I presume, a complete no-go. Don’t attempt to cycle through, use Elnor Lane (see several recommended routes further down).

Nice road when it's not full of nutters. Even Google Maps has caught the aftermath of one driver's inattention at the wheel!

A Nugent tactic to answer a question with a question.

Very well, You can't find anything to suggest the road was clean.
