What happens if you accept/reject cookies? The page was grey until I did
that.

Are you sure the click boxes for Accepting Cookies have not
disappeared off the bottom of the screen ?. Until you
Accept or Manage then the screen is dimmed down and unresponsive

I just tried that site with FF and it is OK for me on Win 10 Pro/32
(was Win 7 Pro/32).

It works ok for me in Opera - which has problems with some sites which
work in Chrome. I've never worked out why!

Probably not any help but it works fine here after clicking the button
at the bottom of the page to reject cookies. I;m using Firefox v109.0 on
Win10 pro and v110.0 on FreeBSD.

I'm not seeing any reference to cookies on that site.

I have standard tracking protection set in FF

You have to accept/reject cookies before the greyness disappears. It's
common on a lot of sites but sometimes the options to select cookie
types is not that obvious. I've see some sites where the cookie options
are just a very thin banner at the top or bottom of the screen and
easily overlooked.

Perhaps in chrome you have already accepted the cookies and that setting
will be remembered until you either manually delete cookies or set the
browser option to automatically delete them on browser closure

Nothing active on the greyed out site. The *sign up* page is alive.

Do you have a cookie extension in firefox, like “I don’t care about cookies”
as this sometimes does not work I have just tried it on that page and
its greyed out until I disabled IDCAC

Eureka!

That brought up the cookie choice on the site and normality returned.

Thanks to all who contributed.

I suspect new stuff is happening much faster than I can keep up:-(

Works OK for me in Firefox, after I accept cookies to get rid of the
grey screen. I have a problem that Firefox now throws up an error 400
saying "malformed request" when I try to log into Google Drive - I
have to use Google Chrome.

Solution upthread from Mark.

While you are all here:-) I may have partly resolved the issue with my
Epson ET-2650 printer.

Apart from supply failures, my desktop is kept running along with
Firefox, Thunderbird etc.

On the last printer failure, I noticed there was an upgrade waiting to
be installed for FF. Once this had installed, the printer worked
normally! Memory issue pointed up by Paul?

Because HTML is an intentionally loose standard, originally intended to
work intelligibly with any browser. But many (most?) 'professional' web
developers only seem to test their creations on one or two browsers,
usually not including FF. Some developers don't seem capable of putting
a single word on a page without relying on JavaScript.

Really about time you upgrade to at least windows10 (or linux)
you will find that firefox and Chrome will no longer update and some sites will block access
if you have a win7 retail key you may still be able to use it for a
win10 install or you can buy a retail key from electronicfirst.com for
£5

Old dogs and new tricks syndrome:-(

This is an ex-college desktop and still gets Windows security updates.

Free upgrades were offered but spurned.

I try not to go anywhere dodgy.

I had a moan about an apparent completely blank page on nextdoor.com in
Waterfox and had to log in manually on another browser. It appears that to a
blind user the page would not work for selecting anything from the keyboard.
They have now fixed this and all is back to normal. I do think that the EU
law on having to agree cookies has caught a lot of sites off guard, and they
have cobbled together something without testing it properly.
Sad to think that these so called experts seem to be clueless.

As far as I know the 3rd year of paid extended support for Win7 ended in
January, the only version that is in any way supported now is Windows7

Ok. Andy. I'm inclined to stick with it until something dramatic
happens.
I do keep regular backups and hope to be able to restore the system if
something nasty arrives.

FWLIW Win 98 security updates were available many years after MS stopped supporting it. They were 3rd party. If you ran 98, security was hardly its priority, but the updates did improve it a good bit.
