A cyclist in Edinburgh staged a go-slow protest in front of one of the city’s trams during Thursday morning’s rush hour after the driver beeped her at a set of traffic lights in the Scottish capital’s West End.

The cyclist had been waiting at a red light at the junction of Lothian Road and Princes Street, with the tram driver sounding his horn after the lights changed to green, reports Edinburgh Live (link is external).

According to passers-by who saw the incident, the bike rider then pedalled slowly in front of the tram – and for good measure, also flipped the driver her middle finger.

One witness told Edinburgh Live: “You could see them waiting at a red light on Princes Street at the bottom of Lothian Road.

“The cyclist was just in front of the tram and all of a sudden the tram driver tooted his horn as the lights changed to green.

“You could see the cyclist was agitated because she turned around and gestured to the driver before pulling off.

“She then just rode along Princes Street in the middle of the tram tracks continuing to remonstrate with the tram following behind slowly. At one point she turned around and gave the driver the finger.

“Princes Street was pretty busy at that time of the morning with commuters – you could hear one bloke say 'what is that cyclist doing?' before bursting into laughter.

“It was all pretty weird,” the witness added.

“I mean, I've seen plenty of cyclist and driver rammies around Edinburgh but never one with a tram before.”

The junction where the altercation began is the same one where medical student Zhi Min Soh was killed when she was thrown into the path of a tour bus after the wheel of her bike got stuck in a tram track in 2017.

Other cyclists who have suffered serious injury after crashing on the tram tracks have also won compensation, but the number of reported incidents rose in 2019 despite the Edinburgh City Council pledging to make safety improvements.

Earlier this month, the council confirmed that it would make changes to a segregated cycle path being installed on Leith Walk as part of the Trams to Newhaven project after the infrastructure was branded as “moronic” on social media due to sharp zig-zags as the route passed parking bays and other obstacles.

We have been told many times cyclists never stop at red lights and I assume the tram driver pays Rail Tax ( or is it Track Tax).

Completely against the Highway Code. Don't cyclists ever read it?

More car drivers ignore red lights in London.

What?

A *fairy-cyclist* waiting at a red light?

Now we *know* that this story is a fantasy.

Of course, the passengers on the tram are seen as pure scum by
fairy-cyclists and were accorded no respect or consideration at all by
the one in this fairy-tale.

"The fairy-cyclist had been waiting at a red light"!! :-)

You couldn't make it up.

But that journalist (or the journo's source) did.

That's what makes all sensible people sceptical about the "story".

It reads as though it was phoned in from the pub, concocted from the
sketchiest of details.

Never mind the Highway Code (not that fairy-cyclists ever obey it), but
there's always the Highways Act 1980:

QUOTE:
[Section] 137 Penalty for wilful obstruction

(1) If a person, without lawful authority or excuse, in *any* *way*
wilfully obstructs the free passage along a highway he is guilty of an
offence and liable to a fine not exceeding £50.

(2) A constable may arrest without warrant *any* *person* whom he sees
committing an offence against this section.

Or is that Totally Different [TM]?

If it's an electric tram it will be VED exempt.

Many pedestrians now carry video recording devices - which web sites
specially put up for the task can they be uploaded to? We need to get
this scum off the roads and pavements.

How do the authorities trace the very many fairy-cyclists who so
frequently disrespect red traffic lights (and by doing so, disrespect
the rights of other road-users)?

Seeing Red Can I be fined for driving through a red light?

RUNNING a red light could have serious consequences as thousands die in traffic accidents on junctions every year.

But even if no accident occurs, drivers can still be slapped with a hefty fine and penalty points on their licence.

Can I get fined for driving through a red light?

The traffic laws are clear that driving through a red light is a strict liability offence.

Failing to comply with the rules carries a minimum fine of £100 and three penalty points.

But in more severe cases, the penalty may increase to six penalty points and a maximum fine of £1,000.

Examples of more serious offences include causing an accident, speeding, or driving through a red light after it has remained red for a long time.

Running a red light doesn't always mean driving through a junction at a red light - an offence has also been committed if any part of the vehicle crosses over the white stop line.

If the offence has been detected by a fixed camera, you can expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution to arrive by post within two weeks.

Two drivers caught on camera jumping red lights have received hefty fines – with one also disqualified from driving – after failing to provide their information to the police.

The motorists were among several drivers caught on dashcam by members of the public who reported them to Devon and Cornwall Police’s Op Snap.

Other videos submitted show a car driving on the pavement close to a pedestrian, a vehicle swerving through vehicles on a roundabout and a highly dangerous overtaking manoeuvre.

Two videos show motorists ignoring red traffic lights – and also consequently ignoring the follow-up paperwork sent to them by Devon and Cornwall Police to provide information about the driver of the vehicle. As a consequence, both received hefty fines.

One of the drivers was fined £660, ordered to pay £156 costs and was also disqualified from driving for six months. The other was fined £660, ordered to pay costs of £686 and given six penalty points on their driving license.

The videos have been released by the Vision Zero South West road safety partnership as an example of what is not acceptable on the roads of Devon and Cornwall.

Superintendent Adrian Leisk, Alliance strategic lead for roads policing and chairman of the Vision Zero South West enforcement sub group, said: “There are some examples of really poor driving in these latest videos, including some which clearly had the potential to seriously endanger lives.

“There were also examples of behaviours that might seem pretty innocuous, such as jumping a red light and not responding to requests for information. You will notice that these offences have been dealt with particularly robustly, in terms of both fines and endorsements to driving licenses. We will seek to prosecute, though the courts, when a registered keeper does not respond to a Notice of Intended Prosecution.

“More and more people have dashcams and helmet cameras and we are receiving record numbers of submissions to Op Snap. We really want driver’s to think twice about jumping that red light, or perform a dangerous manoeuvre. You may well be identified and prosecuted.”

Since Op Snap was founded in 2019, Devon and Cornwall Police have taken action against more than 2,200 drivers across the two counties. For more information visit dc.police.uk/opsnap

The Department for Transport released its official annual road casualty statistics in October which showed that in Devon and Cornwall 44 people were killed and 624 people were seriously injured.

While this is a reduction compared to 2019 – when there were 48 people killed and 768 seriously injured – 2020 also saw a 21% reduction in vehicle traffic across Great Britain due to the Covid-19 lockdowns.

The Department for Transport say the decrease in fatalities in 2020 is associated with this reduction in road traffic, meaning the rate of fatalities actually increased in 2020.

Of those killed or seriously injured on Devon and Cornwall’s roads:

270 were car occupants
196 were motorcyclists
96 were pedestrians
78 were cyclists
18 were van/light goods vehicle occupants
2 were HGV occupants
1 was a bus or coach occupant

There were also four reported casualties of incidents involving e-scooters in Devon and Cornwall during 2020.

Alison Hernandez, Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, is also chairman of Vision Zero South West and the national APCC lead for road safety.

Commissioner Hernandez said: “When dealing with figures like these it’s important to remember that every single one represents a person who has suffered dramatically as a result of a collision on our roads.

“Whether it’s someone who dies, sustains a brain injury, loses a limb or suffers from the harrowing mental effects of a road traffic collision, the effect this incident has on them – as well as their friends and family – cannot be underestimated. “The whole purpose of Vision Zero South West is to cut road traffic deaths to zero. All our partners will admit this is an extremely ambitious target but one which needs to be at the forefront of all of our minds. “

Like fairy-cyclists so frequently - and perhaps usually - do, you mean?

How do they trace you when you're a fairy-cyclist ignoring red traffic
lights?

Drivers could be caught out by new infra-red traffic lights which detect speeding.

The new technology is designed to detect drivers who exceed speed limits rules when the lights turn green. However, the cameras will also be able to identify drivers who have jumped a red light.
