"asking for a friend"

Anyone come across or better still worked with software that can recognise an
object to a greater or lesser degree and provide meta data about it?

For example take photo on phone - shuttle it off to some cloud service - that
returns data such as "sandwich maker" + "breville" (assuming it isn't a morphy
richards toaster).

Am aware there are service for processing barcodes; looking for something a
little less specific.

cheers all,
j

Thanks - that's just the kind of thing I was looking for - amazing
capabilities when you look into what it can do with e.g. video content
recognition.

Yes it was google lens (I think it used to be called goggles BICW) that I came
across first & wondered what else might exist out there. The Amazon
rekognition tool looks like it ticks the boxes.

Interesting. I could do with something that can distinguish between
"cat" and "cat carrying item of local wildlife".

And then whether said item of local wildlife is mouse or moose?

Chris
PS. Or even whether cat is small fluffy kitten sized or lion sized
presumably? [1]

[1] I have no idea where you live obviously.

There is this solution <https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-48825761>
but which seems to be a bit excessive from a computation point of view -
but hey that's modern "AI" for you.

I remember reading years ago of a bloke who did something similar but he
arranged the entrance to the catflap in such a way that the cat was lit
from one side and filmed from the other so that the cat was silhouetted
for the camera. This made the image recognition significantly easier as
a silhouette of a normal cat head versus one with mouse or bird hanging
out of its mouth looks significantly different and doesn't require much
computation to distinguish.

Needless to say, I can't find that article now. I do remember him saying
that it took a few weeks to setup, test and perfect. And once it was
working the cat took rather less time to learn to not bring dead things
back and it wasn't needed any more. :-)

I remember reading that same article, and also trying to find it more
recently and hitting the BBC article. And another look around has just
brought me to https://github.com/maxkostka/catflap

This might be the old one:
https://web.archive.org/web/20060806160320/http://www.quantumpicture.com/Flo_Control/flo_control.htm

Despite the cat in question being only just larger than kitten-sized and
unlikely ever to grow into her ears, when I managed to imprison one of
her captures [1] she nearly managed to push me off in her desire to play
with it.

[1] I may have mentioned using plastic takeaway containers as useful
storage. They're also pretty effective at trapping wildlife, although
their translucency means that said wildlife is still visible to its captor.

I remember that one too, but can no longer find it, ISTR it had to distinguish
cats from raccoons ...

Finally, UKRM sinks to discussions related to cats.

What do you mean "yet". This is a text-only newsgroup, thank goodness.
