Nope, still looks like someone digested and then threw up an ascii chart.
I could install an nntp reader, but i really can't be arsed, and I've retired from being a geek.

Tis all I've used for years now, I just like that it syncs across devices e.g .home / work / mobile phone / dedicated toilet tablet etc

It's definitely an idiot decision by whoever implemented the GG
interface, to strip all leading spaces and to not offer the option
of displaying messages in a fixed width font.

I just checked GG, and the option to view the original message is greyed
out, with some guff about email addresses being private.

GG was launched with the intent of replacing USENET, not interfacing
with it. No thought, apparently, was given to pre-existing protocols.
Just like everything googe does, it's a case of "this is the way we
think it should be done, we don't care how you've always workedin the
past, if we all change to do it our new way the world will be a better
place".

>I just checked GG, and the option to view the original message is greyed

It wouldn't display any differently anyway, that option would simply
show you all the headers and stuff that GG has strippped off for you.

I've used that view in the past and it does show you the original
message content, with headers, but crucially for ASCII art, it also
includes any leading spaces in the message body.

I don't know if it displays the original message content in a
proportional font, but it's easy enough to copy & paste the message
text without the font attribute into another plain text editor,
so you can see ASCII art in all its glory.

We have more advanced picture formats now that are fairly good digital representations of the real world, they even have ones that move with sound !

I'm not particularly bothered if folks using Google Groups can see
ASCII art correctly or not. I realize that some folks do use it as
their primary / sole method of accessing newsgroups, since it's quick
and easy to use vs. having to sign up for an account somewhere and
configure an NNTP client.

But- it just seems odd that Google would make the choice to strip
leading spaces from Usenet messages. The use of a proportional
font is unfortunate but somewhat understandable, stripping leading
spaces is something unexpected, and as we 'merkins would say, "out
of left field".
