I borrowed a small petrol gennie from work when the storms hit, did the same
thing. I did remember to throw the main breaker so as not to energise the whole
neighbourhood. It was just adequate to give us some light, staggered when the
freezer turned on but at least it saved the contents.

I remember back in 1987, the band I was in were doing some recording at
the (enormous) home of the parents of someone who wanted to grow up to
be a record producer. His idea of a 4-way extension was a 4-way
extension without a cable and plug, plus the aforementioned widowmaker.
I just absolutely refused to touch it, out of a sense of
self-preservation combined with reasonable self-knowledge of how a)
clumsy and b) unlucky I am.

Hmm. Depends where one lives. I presume your are referring to the UK, but

Ikea in Málaga has a huge covered parking area that has solar panels on
every square inch. Pretty impressive. I assume they power the whole
shopping complex.

Every few months a different city, in a different country re-invents "solar
freakin' roadways" yet again, pours a few million into it, fails, then quietly
buries the idea ... if you want solar that's fine, just put it where it works!

Last Saturday (23/4), Sun and wind energy production in NL exceeded demand
for the first time ever.
