Hull residents will be able to ride e-bikes for free, thanks to a new £8m scheme due to launch in the city this summer.

The 'Cycling made e-asy' initiative is already under way in Manchester and is set to be introduced by the end of July to Hull, as well as Sheffield, Luton and Dunstable and Leicester. The e-bikes will be available to loan for up to three months.

The Department for Transport are funding the scheme, which will be run by Cycling UK and other partners. The aim is to encourage more people to take up cycling.

Sarah Mitchell, Cycling UK's chief executive, said: "Each of our chosen locations will have a variety of e-cycles available to suit a variety of participant's needs. We understand taking the first step to start cycling can be a difficult prospect for many people. This project will allow them to access an e-cycle without obstacles holding them back, to help them make real changes to their travel habits."

Support and training will be available to book for people wishing to use the service who have not cycled for some time or are unfamiliar with e-bikes. Cycling made e-asy forms part of the government's wider Cycling and Walking plan, with the aim of half of all journeys within towns and cities to take place by walking or cycling by 2030.

Cycling Minister Trudy Harrison said: "E-cycles are a great way for people with longer or hillier journeys to travel and the £8m we have provided for this scheme will help make cycling the natural first choice for many journeys - a key government commitment from the prime minister's cycling and walking plan."

In March, six e-bikes were made available to loan from cycle hubs in Trinity Market and the University of Hull. Hull City Council, the university and charity R-evolution funded the project, which allows e-bikes to be hired at a rate of £20 per day, or £100 per week, with a £100 refundable deposit.

Is there any plan for beneficiaries to have to take compulsory courses
on health and safety, including (but not limited to):

- the Highway Code,
- cycle maintenance,
- the law as it applies to fairy-cyclists (particularly on the
meaning and effect of road signs), the rights of other people
(especially pedestrians on footways and in pedestrian-only
areas), etc, etc?

If not, why not?

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has welcomed the new cycle hire
scheme reaching a 62000 mile milestone since its launch in November.

There have been over 39,000 journeys taken on the bikes, with over
10,400 active users.

The city's taxpaying residents, rather than cycling groups or cyclists,
have stumped up £17m for the rental scheme.

Using these figures, it can be seen that the journeys average out at 1.6
miles, at a cost of £435 each. It might have been cheaper to provide a
fleet of stretch limousines instead.

There was no mention of the income generated, or the number of missing
bicycles.

Too difficult and too embarrassing.

You can also hire ordinary bikes and get free repairs at Re-evolution in Trinity Market and they tour other parts of the city during the week, then there's this separate electric bike scheme this is funded by the Government, if it's good enough for Luton it's good enough for Hull that's what I say. Let's wait and see if it's a success or not, before shunning the idea and remember this is government project nothing to do with the Labour or now Lib Dem council.

Let's wait and see if it's a success or not, before shunning the idea and remember this is government project nothing to do with the Labour or now Lib Dem council.

INDEED.

You can hire a car for less than that.

HOW CAN ANYONE MAKE A SUCCESS OF £435 PER CYCLE JOURNEY?:

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has welcomed the new cycle hire
scheme reaching a 62000 mile milestone since its launch in November.

There have been over 39,000 journeys taken on the bikes, with over
10,400 active users.

The city's taxpaying residents, rather than cycling groups or cyclists,
have stumped up £17m for the rental scheme.

Using these figures, it can be seen that the journeys average out at 1.6
miles, at a cost of £435 each. It might have been cheaper to provide a
fleet of stretch limousines instead.

You know what? - I would imagine that there would be some sort of deposit scheme with maybe credit card details taken. All damages and losses covered.

Indeed. Enterprise has a corporate rate of less than £17 a day for a
typical hatchback.

Oh! Your talking about an earlier scheme, not the FREE one that's been announced today. 'Free' means that you won't have to pay.

Then why are there so many comments about a charge being involved?

They might be free of charge, but not of cost.

We all need to get away from polluting transport, as the DfT state so correctly.

The real trick is to export the pollution somewhere else, such as China,
where all the environmentally-ravaging metal extraction takes place, and
to wherever it is that make the millions of tons of concrete for the
subsidy farms. Then we can all pretend to be 'holier than thou'.

The only "hills" in Hull are railway flyovers at 4%. Some drivers still have to walk up them when they try cycling. :-)
