To carry on I will need to reinstall/rejoin it.

Soooo, before I get on it and play, what options are open to me for :
Not being seen by others?
Only joining groups I want to join?
Only letting limited people see me?

Any thoughts?

I was under the impression that Whatsapp was a messaging service, rather
than a social media thing. That's they only way I've used it.
You just put your phone number in, and no more details required. Someone
can then send their message to your number and vice versa.
Groups can be messaged, and people can be added/removed from groups.
Otherwise that's it.

Get a pre paid card and only give that number to them. Your number is only
a unique id so you still use your normal data provider. You can block
everyone/thing else, so should be pretty watertight.

At it's core, yes it is a messaging service.
But once you have allowed it access to your contacts, then they can all
see that your are using the service[1]. That is the bit I am trying to
work around right now.

Anyone can add you to a group.

Basically, I'd like to "block all" and then add the contacts I want to
use with it.

Since FB took over WA, I have not been overly happy with it. And lke
many ditched it last year when they fubared their new terms and conditions.

[1] WA takes an encrypted copy and matches to just about everyone as far
as I can work out.

Currently trying to work out how to do that.
I've installed it, not allowed it to read my contacts and Jean can send
me messages.

But this means that anyone with my number can send me messages
regardless (it's not that I want to ignore people, as I use other apps
and SMS to do a lot of comunicating).

Ideally I'd like a simple way to just block everyone, and then only
allow selected people/groups access. But it looks, so far, that you have
to block individually, which could take some time :-(

I think you only need to use the sim once, to confirm your number and set up
WA, then you can just go back to your normal sim and WA will continue to
use the number you registered. People can only app you via that number.

I'm in a similar predicament with a group of people who 'won't use
facebook or messenger because of the security risk" (even though we
already have those) and so set up a WA group - despite *knowing* it is
owned by fb! My request to use Telegram or Signal or anything but WA
fell on deaf ears.

As somebody else has said, it was so much easier with SMS groups.
However, being able to send photos etc 'for free' is a big plus on any
other service.

That's the problem, I don't want any of the x00 people in my contacts
list, who happen to be on WA already, suddenly being notified that I'm
there too and sending all sorts of crap before I can shut it down!

I'm in four WhatsApp groups, and no-one outside those groups has ever
tried to text me. It might help that my "About" entry is "I use
WhatsApp as little as possible"!

I've persueded a lot of people over to Signal and Telegram, but I doubt
I will be in a good position with the blood bike group.

I might introduce them to NextCloud talk :-). Get a few people with
RaspPI and away you go :-)

Solution so far seems to be just don't let WA access to your contacts.
Then when someone messages you, add them to the contacts on WA.

Yep, usually 12 months before you get to use the supplied bike (if wanted).
They do insist that you wear BB vest and have a sticker on your bike (as
you will park it near Ambulance bays).

The marked bike is tracked, so absolutly no speeding allowed with that
one. Will just stick to the Peg and XJR.

The assement was a PITA having to keep to speed limits :-)

I think I got brownie points for spotting a 20 zone.

You're missing the point - Whatsapp doesn't actually use the number
except as a reference. It's quite possible to have the app installed
on a device without a SIM card installed, like a tablet, so using a
different phone number than the one actually active on your phone os
perfectly viable.
