Ooops, mea culpa, I thought that unit was an ionizer.
We had one(an ionizer/air filter thing)[1] in the living room and it
seemed to collect every dust particle in the house but instead of then
filtering the dust out, it all seemed to land on the wall behind it.

[1] We needed it (or at least we thought we did) as youngest son had
'bad' lungs (BPD Bronco Pulmonary Dyspasia), wife had asthma.

I stand mine on a sheet of A4 paper, then you can tip the dust out of the window.

When my wife developed asthma I bought one for our bedroom. It did not
seem to help her asthma but it blackened the wall behind it. It was
shaped like a black pyramid, no dust seem to settle on the pyramid only
on the wall.

I have just remembered it is behind some boxes; I hope it was unplugged.

I was just looking at exactly that item.
SWMBO isn't able to breath properly at night & is permanently tired. If
one of theses things helped, even a little bit, it would be worth the zu.
My doubts rest on the fact that we always have the bedroom window open
at night - it unforgets me of an irate engineering type on a frigate,
who complained about trying to air condition the entire Mediteranean.
(Due to hatches being left open.)

Maybe the crap build up was because the unit we had was twenty years ago
and of twenty year old design, or because we hadn't placed it in the
centre of the room. Would a filtration unit without ionizer be better ?

The air outside is in no way clean (pollen, fecal colliforms etc),
cleaning the air inside is a GOOD idea, leaving the windows open not so
good.

I often use a similar line to your engineering type "shut that door we
are not trying to heat the whole of Balerno"

Which car manufacturer was it that claimed the air coming from the
exhaust was cleaner than that coming in through the intake? Maybe buy
one of those and port the tailpipe to the bedroom?

They like easy targets then, I suppose their advertising was more
honest than a cbyvgvpvna.

Alas[1] SWMBO insists that she _must_ have the window open since without
it,
"There is no air".

I too prefer the window open, but I don't use even a partial vacuum as
an excuse.

While we were finishing this place up, just before moving in, with
all five of us and a couple of tradesmen in the place I accidentally left
the ventilation power off for a couple of hours - nobody noticed it getting
stale but we all noticed the change once I switched it back on again.

Probably a misuse of statistics?

The air coming in through (eg) a ventilator - or anybody else on the
road (cyclist?) - has been shown to carry about 4x the pollution of that
received alongside the road (eg) pedestrian. So it *could* be argued,
legitimately but misleadingly (eg by a 'manufacturer'?), that the
exhaust at the side of the road was less of an issue than being in the car.

It is also a good reason why car air inputs should be taken high up and
not through the front grille...

Belatedly, does anybody fancy a heating FOAK ?

I was running a solid fuel stove, which finally died last year (fair
enough; 10yr guarantee, I got 25 out of it). Not having expected it, I
made the default decision to heat through the winter on my other source,
a wall-mounted gas radiant; just a few weeks before we started hearing
of price rises. Pity, that. The last load of solid fuel cost me 350 for
the winter before this with a few bags left over, last Oct-Mar the bills
have come to ~600 for gas.

So now I have the summer to wonder what next ? Electricity, or bring
stuff into the house and set fire to it ?

"Heat pumps", they chant. So far as I can see, a minimal system would
have me something like 4k out of pocket on the capital cost, assuming
the grand talk about grants comes true. I could do that, but then ? The
talk seems to be a gain of between 3 & 4 times as much heat out as
electricity in. Which, given that 'leccy is costing > 4 times the
(current) price of gas, would have me committed to paying larger bills
than I already don't like.

And gas sounds like it's heading for complete meltdown.

Whereas, I could put a new modernstandards solidfule stove in for
"probably not more than" 1k or so. Briquettes have gone up, but still
less than (current) gas (wood's a luxury product in this built-up area,
& not really an option). Plus I'd have my very own personalised energy
security.

The planetary equivalent of wet feet.

jbex best with lots of insultation, and underfloor heating (or at least larger
surface triple panel rajiators)

Depending how hot you like your hot water, they may need a top-up from an
immersion to reach it, especially if it's really cold outside.

I seem to have unforgotten that you have a fancy phase change electrickery water
hottage thing?

So maybe you're only looking at space heating anyway, in which case an
air-to-air mini-split heatpump to a smaller number of rooms, rather than
air-to-water monobloc fits the bill more?

Sunamp, yes. It was much more expensive than an immersion, but the
water's lovely and hot, and I like the Clever (I'm not sure it's going
very far though, because Weight. 100kg to store 7kwh). So hot water's
independently sorted.

Insulation's always a good idea, regardless of the heat source.

> So maybe you're only looking at space heating anyway, in which case an

Minimal, yes. It's a small terrace with the downstairs dividing wall
knocked out & an open stairwell, so I see the house as a single heatable
space with a lid of insulation. So air-to-air along (I guess) the long
side of the downstairs wall. Handwaving estimates around the web seem to
say starting at around £9k.

"Underfloor"'s a new thought; but the hotwater storage wouldn't support
it, and even if it would, without the heat-pump amplification I Don't
Think So. And adding it to a heat pump would do even more unpleasant
things to the capital outlay.

Of course, I could defray that to some extent by installing panels on
the roof. Which would do best when I need it least, so lots of storage
....

Or I could continue to be able to put food on the table.

I have Zbarl, to some extent, but the more I lay out on installing
stuff, the less I'm willing to commit to a big increase in regular
payments to run it, the rools of eco-gnomics being what they are.
