ZX9r (after I'd fallen off and bust my shoulder) and you riding your Harley.

Then on the return... Champ took the pillion on the Harley. I expect I have
a photo of that somewhere.

I was looking at some bike photos earlier trying to remember when I got
the Z750, and that was 18 years ago. The Beemer I'm riding at the moment
was bought 33 years ago.

Not all concrete is equal. My old B&D hammer drill had served me well
for years in the UK, but when I moved to France it would hardly make a
dent in, e.g. the garage walls. I think SDS was relatively new then
(c. 2002) and I had never heard of it, but the local DIY shop pointed
me at one such, for what felt like an eye-watering 150-odd euros, and
the difference was astonishing, cutting the job from half an hour
sweating and blunting several drill buts for a couple of cm of
penetration to just a few seconds. Came in handy to have one with a
hammer-only setting as well, chiselling off old tiles, concreted-in
baths and stuff.

Swiss concrete is also rock hard, and at some point a second SDS drill
has been acquired. Nowadays I have to resist carefully whenever I'm in
a tool shop (or Lidl, from time to time) to not get caught up by the
cordless ones now available for not so much money...

In my case, I tried using my Homebase Special SDS drill to put a
couple of holes in the garage wall, and punched a hole clean through,
taking a couple of chunks out of the bricks in the process.

If you get one don't throw away your corded drill.

We have granite walls through which we've had lots of holes drilled
recently for pipes and cables. All the tradesmen arrive with cordless
kit but they often end up borrowing my corded SDS drill, even though
it's a cheap'n'nasty B&Q one I've had for donkey's years, because it's
much quicker.

I fitted knobblies on the Grom after I dragged it home. Jesus fucking
wept. I've been changing tyres for getting on for 50 years but never
struggled like that. Getting the second bead over the rim during
removal completely defeated me. I ended up tying the rim to the van &
using a ratchet strap around the tyre as a winch to pull it off.

The final insult was discovering my Abba balancer shafts are too thick
for the Grom wheels. I don't think that'll be too much of a problem
though; they felt fine on a 2-up blat along a dual-carriageway on
Saturday[1]. We nearly hit 60mph!
