Finally building some PCs again, I'd done well just repurposing 3 year old ex-corporate machines of late, but someone insisted I use 9th or 10th Gen i5s this time, and I need a PCI slot so...

ASUS has quite a few "Pro" motherboards that suit. Q470, H410 and B460 chipsets mainly. Will I see any difference in reality between these? Anyone seen a good article that will explain the differences at a sensible level?

Thanks

Are you making high performance workstations, or gaming rigs? If not,
no-one will ever see a difference between low end and high end chipsets.
There really isn't much in it anyway, any more.

Go for whichever is the cheapest that has all the functions you need.

Agreed.

In the end it comes down to the speed of the cpu and the amount of ram.

not necessarily just about the PCU and RAM.....

Some chipsets support PCIe 4.0, some support PCIe 3.0

Some support thunderbolt with an add on, some don't

Some support 1 off M2 Nvme, some support 2 off Nvme.

some have different numbers of PCIe lanes which can impact on some PCIe
slots if you are running 2 or more PCIe cards that use the full 8x or
16x lanes.

So its also about the features of the various chipsets that are
important to you.

It's mostly about the I/O ports:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1200

Of course, a particular motherboard may not pin them all out.

It's more than they're not consistent listing features, the Q470 board didn't list dual channel memory as a thing, but I guess since the controller is in the CPU now, it's really not the board's call. That wiki adequately cleared it up, thanks.
