When digging for something in my garage I found an iPod that (I think) is 17 years old and I suspect this particular unit had been in a (slightly) damp garage for over 10 years, maybe as many as 15.

I plugged it into my Mac overnight and the battery took some charge.

I'm planning on a trip this year and I like to listen to music while I ride and can control an iPod via my GPS but the jolts in the past caused the mechanical HD to park its heads and the audio to stutter. I'd read about people making boards that allow solid state memory to be used so I bought one that takes 2 SD cards up to a maximum (total) capacity of 128GB. Fortunately I had a couple of spare SD cards.

Five minutes with a thin metal tool and I pried it open. About five minutes and I've got the HD replacement in place (admittedly the wrong way around). Another five minutes and it's in place, the device is whining about needing to be re-initialised, so connect it to the computer, press a few buttons and it's now syncing music into its (fairly) capacious memory.

Really quite impressed by all this. Easily pleased.

Have ordered a new battery.

Nice. Is it the Classic? I have one I used to use on long flights.

Yes. Well the 'Video 30GB (5th Generation)'.

I 'won' that one at a business card raffle at MWC one year for one of
the java based phone OS [1]. Strange that I should win when that just
happened to be my area of responsibility at work and I was running
an assessment project with them to decide if we would build products
on it (we didn't and neither did anyone else in the end). But, still... what
are the chances of a random card being plucked etc. etc.

It ran out of space for my library and, like you, I used to fly a lot
so I bought a succession of 120/160GB ones. I think I bought three
or four... leaving two or three on planes.

I had one of the second generation 20GB ones (also lost on a plane)
and a third generation 20GB one. I sold this for next to nothing
which I think was a mistake.

I must have spent a small fortune on iPods. Happy days.

Heh, that's made me dig out my 60Gb iPod. I'll need to find the cable
to charge it and see if it still works.

I've owned loads of portable music players and used most of them to block
out office noise and on my travels whether that's on a bike, train or plane.

The worst (probably) was one of the early ones that I had; a Creative MuVo that only
had (I think) 64 or 128MB of memory. Just enough to get all of Blur's Think Tank
album on. I listened to that all the way from Calais to Saintes one year (2003?).
It did, I must say, get a little wearing.

I still often have one plugged in when I'm gardening, cutting grass etc.
