three months of travelling, armed with surfboards, windsurfboards,
SUPs, & the Grom. I don't do usenet when I'm away (or much at all these
days), so I'm expecting to come back to at least 27 unread messages.

Hope to see some of you at the lake in Italy next month, & maybe some
others along the way[2].

Sounds like a good trip. I reckon it takes about 3 weeks to get used to
things, then the trip really starts! I like the lakes in N. Italy but
can get a bit oppressive (weather and people). The lakes in S.Austria
are also very pleasant IMO.

Enjoy. It took me a little time to get used to it and adapt to not having
the daily grind or work bullshit to deal with.

The funding model for the railway - essentially long distance and
commuting - has been slow to recover from the pandemic. The long
distance has come back but the commuting is, shall we say, interesting.

Unsurprisingly, the traditional 9-5 M-F has changed with newer more
fleixble approaches by many employers (the haunted pencil's war on
"Woking from Home" looks a bit insane).

Although the footfall now looks normalish at 92%ish (it has actually
increased on pre pandemic on weekends) it's not consistent across the
week M-F.

Season tickets haven't recovered. They're running at about 43%.

The season tickets are what we should be looking at. Unfortunately
neither the DfT or the wider industry has a clue as to what they should
replace them with.

Or are we? There's an interesting article on that in Private Eye. With
tickets sold by one train firm for that firm only, which are used on
another train firm because the passenger didn't realise the restriction,
the passenger then has to buy a second valid ticket which double-counts
the journey. As "anytime" tickets for 15 times as much as the cheapest
advance ones, it can be cheaper to book advance tickets for more than
one train, turning one journey into two or more. There's also
split-ticketing systems, where buying tickets for sequential short
journeys (often on the same train) saves money. This then appears as
several short journeys, downplaying the demand for longer trips and
direct trains, and overstating the use that some stations have.

L's son works for Dept. Business, Innovation and Skills I thik they've had some
of those billet-douxs from JRM, as he said to me they've been encouraged to WFH
at least 2 days a week from before the plague years, there's only enough
seating/desks for 1/4 of the staff at anyone time.

Same with my county council employer. As they upgrade the desk hardware to
have laptop docking bars rather than thin clients, the number of desks is
reducing. The ground floor office where I had a permanent desk has been
repurposed with accessible meeting rooms and other parts of the Shire Hall
complex has been split up into meeting rooms of various sizes. My small
team of 7 largely works from home with maybe 3 face to face meetings a
month. Yesterday was the first day since 2019 that I did a 9-5 in the
office.

As far as I'm concerned it's back to normal: the overground into
Waterloo was standing room only this morning and the Jubilee line trains
were so packed only a handful were able to get on at each set of doors
and I had to let two trains go by before I was able to get on.
