I believe there is a another that was never completed, which would be
completed if the economics justified it, which it may well do if the
first one has been destroyed.

Since the article states that they only do about 20 charters a year, and
the incomplete hull needs upgrading to meet modern standards I think it
very unlikely unfortunately

It has been confirmed that the AN-225 has been destroyed. I suppose
that, as the Russians paid for it, they reckoned that they could do
whatever they wanted with it.

Bullshit it does in the Ukraine.

Depends whose checking the history:-)
Eastern Europeans have been known to "bend" the rules occasionally, they
could just do what the Yanks do and paint a big "experimental" sign on
the side:-)
News report I read stated that Antonov have "vowed to rebuild it", how
successful they are will of course depend on how much damage there is.

They would probably want to fly it in other places besides Ukraine.

If there was any doubt about it's airworthiness, it would be banned from
flying over most first world countries. It has happened often enough
with dodgy third word airlines.

You can do that here too. the only slight problem would be that
"Experimental" aircraft cannot be used for commercial purposes.

Maybe maybe not, plenty of major projects get announced, a large
proportion never get off the ground. I hope that do get it up but I have
my doubts.

Would anyone actually check?
I know that airlines get banned from places due to a bad safety rating
but AFAIK the Antonov has a good safety rating so would anyone have any
reason to suspect that they haven't done anything by the book?
Not that I am suggesting that that will happen.
Since the damage to the aircraft is now well known would an
international organization need to sign it off before it can go back to
work?

Sure, but that doesn't require every screw to have a history.

That isnt true of special purpose aircraft like that.

Really depends on who will pay for it and if that is economically viable.

Nope, not with with special purpose aircraft like that.

In the Vietnam War era, the Helio Courier was popular with the
US Army [1] and also Air America. The rumor was that at some
point Helio and AA got into a ..disagreement.. and AA's parent
started building their own vs. buying them. Of course, such
would lack provenance, but...

So used ones were suspect.

1] A friend told a story about being picked up at Hue in a U-10
Super Courier. There was a line awaiting a takeoff slot.

He being impatient, the NCO pilot u-turned off the taxiway onto
the grass between it and the runway, and took off. Given its
~30kt stall speed, it wouldn't have taken much of a rollout.

The tower was quite unhappy.

LOL, sounds very dodgy but that was a long time ago and in a war, too
many bureaucrats keeping themselves employed harassing the planet to get
away with that in 2022.

I dare say this has created difficulties now. Some things may have been
built on the basis that this aircaft had been booked to carry them.

That might be reason enough to get it back in the air.

I think the current news is that it has definitively been destroyed.

Still, there's the second partially complete one, and I believe steps
are being taken to protect it. Whether that ultimately works depends on
whether the destruction of the first one was unintentional, or an act of
wanton vandalism.

And of course, as soon as I posted that, I learn that the situation is
