Which it has flagged as a trojan. Are your customers aware you're
intentionally putting malware on their computers?

MS aren't the ones who need suing.

The detection of

"Trojan.Malware.300983.susgen"

is bogus. This is not the same thing as a so-called
"False Positive". "False Positive" declarations occur in
good faith situations. Whereas the above "susgen" is
merely "bad tradecraft". It's when you're in the AV business,
but you don't know what you're doing.

If you examine the fossil record, some computer games
packages have received similar scan results. When one of those
happens, no other more established AV products report a problem.

The "susgen" is the secret to decoding this. It means they
really didn't analyse the thing, there was a suspicious behavior,
but then on computers, there are many suspicious behaviors.

If you're interested in the topic, you have an absolutist view of
the world, write a three line HelloWorld program, compile it,
upload a.out to the Virustotal engine, and see how the more
shabby engines declare your program. Even if there's a single
printf in the program, I bet you can manage to get at
least two

"Malicious"

for your trouble. The situation is really that pathetic.

Many of the engines, don't have a full set of unpackers. Which
means, for any practical purpose, you need not bother with them.
You would not be buying the ones that declared they
"could not open the file in question". It's like if you
hired a blind security guard to protect the house.

(Sample of a packer...)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPX

Analysing Virustotal output, is like reading tea leaves.
There's an art to it.

It depends on what kind of applications you want. There is voluminous
software available for Unix-type systems, but a lot of it is not necessarily
what typical users want.

I'd have plenty enough to do without having to fight with Microsoft's
crappy software!

Hi Paul,
Interestng way of spinning it. "good faith" versus
"bad tradecraft". The result is the same.

About 15 years ago, a customer's work computers
were acting a little weird. No he COULD NOT have
a virus. He had Norton. I isolated the virus
manually and ran the file through virus total.
Oh s***! Virtually every other engine caught it.
He relented and let me install a different anti
virus (don't remember which one) and never called
me back.
No tea leaves. An elephant in the living room
though (virus and ego).

Well stated. And they have to have what everyone else
has. Quickbooks for instance.

I am the only one I personally know that runs gnucash.

Impressive. And you had to get the users off M$ Only
apps, so double impressive. I have not had any
such luck, except for a few home users

Running M$ Software is like an auto mechanic who
fights with broken cars all day long going out
and buying the worst maintenance car that always
breaks down for his own car and then having
waist his off hours constantly fixing it.

On my M$ Virtual Machines I have for research,
I typically have M$'s update complete disabled.

I should have made it clear those desktop systems are for my own use!
(My home is Microsoft and Apple free.)

However I have set up Linux systems for people to use at home. For those
that just use a browser to "surf thuh web" (a lot of people) they can't
really tell the difference.

I do have quite a few Linux servers in operation at business customers.

Given your description below, sounds exactly like a FP.

However, I'd still not trust any core functionality like "T" has that came

Correct!

If the number of engines was cut down, to include
only the set from AV-Comparatives, the experience
would be entirely different. You would not need
Tea Leaves or a Ouija board.

Sometimes, when Virustotal lights up with 16 hits,
it's still hard to conclude the detection is real.
You have to Google the custom names they use for
the detections, to get some idea what flora or
fauna is involved.

Virustotal started out as a South American company.
It was bought by Google. Since Google is a more
inviting target for lawsuits, they're forced to have
different operating rules for the site. They have
to allow more of the riff-raff AV companies to play there.
Which dilutes the utility of it, and requires a
certain amount of noise filtering by the user.

Are you asking the right question? The real question for me is "Why to
upgrade..."

The 'benefits' seem pointless.

Or at least "undemonstrated". I heard that Windows 11 was supposed to
help manage the use of the two types (P and E) cores on the new Intel
CPUs, but from what I've heard, the best advise (seems to me) to be to
disable the lessor cores. I've haven't seen any reviews along these
lines lately. I'm on the sidelines for now.

That's like trying to determine how many John and/or James Smiths have a

Just one detection, and it's by a weird antivirus nobody has heard of.

Chances are high that it's a false positive.

You will notice that Norton is not on the list.
Norton would really show up bad if they did

Indeed. The 'benefits' are pointless.

The reason was to test bed some of their Point
of Sale software to see how it reacted to
the "pig with the different color lipstick".

And the reason for wanting to know know
and be ready is:

https://www.leg.state.nv.us/Division/Legal/LawLibrary/NRS/NRS-603A.html#NRS603ASec210

And W10's support expires a years or two.

I have fresh installs of Windows 11 on both an ancient Toshiba Satellite
laptop & on a separate HDD on my main PC which is also fairly ancient.
Neither come anywhere near meeting Windows 11 hardware requirements. No TPM
etc.
Both are running local accounts.
Expecting this experiment to last about a month I was surprised to find that
in both instances Windows 11 self activated so I have a laptop that can dual
boot Windows 8.1 & 11 & a PC that can triple boot Windows 8.1, 10 & 11.

Symantec was split into 2 companies, Info Management and Security. The
former Veritas sold to the private equity company Carlyle, the latter to
Broadcom later renamed Norton Life Lock.

AV Comparatives latest 2022 report has *Norton Life Lock 360' on the list.

Results for all tested

At this stage of the AV/AM it appears based on AV Comparative testing
that all products are about the same with only a scant few below 99+% and
most just shy or equal to 100% malware protection. Variation primarily
occurring in False Positive detection.

Same with me. Referrals are my best source.
Unfortunately starting last year, a number
of my older customers have died on me. When
I get a call from an old customer, they think I
an happy to have the work, but don't realize
I am happy they are still ALIVE! It sucks. I
have known some of these folks for over 20 years.

To get new customers. I have to walk in, shake
hands, and hand out cards. It is not very effective
and I have to visit about 40 business to land one.

And if a business does not have an I.T. consultant,
there is always the risk of finding out just exactly
why no one else will work for them. The tip off is
when I have to chase after them to get paid and/or
they accuse me of causing what I was called in to
fix and did fix. There are some real ass holes
out there.

I am always happy when a carded customer calls and
I find out they liked their old I.T. guy but he
moved or he got hired by a corporation (and
moved) and no longer does consulting work.

Can't find any Linux work though, other that what
I generate myself.

I have noticed that too. And M$ is finally doing well too.

I also have customers I've worked with for 20-30 years.

I haven't been actively soliciting new customers. (I have boxes of
business cards that will never get used.) As old customers retire,
pass away, or sell to new owners who have their own computer support
I'm not soliciting replacements. I figure when I run out of customers
I'll retire from this and do something else if I get bored. The only
new customers I consider taking on are referrals from long-time trusted
clients IF it's a good fit. (There are some things for which I refuse
to provide support for in any case, like Outlook or Exchange.)

I haven't decided yet whether to bail out on customers who run Windows 11.
On the one hand it is an abomination and in my limited contact with
it a pain in the ass to work with. However not many have it yet. For now
I'm advising my people not to accept Microsoft's "generous" free upgrade
if it is offered and to buy new PCs with Windows 10 whenever possible. In
time there may be ways of dealing with the steaming pile of obnoxious crap
in Windows 11 to make it more palatable.

I got rid of the asshole clients a long time ago. At this point I only
work for people I like or projects I'm interested in.

It's out there. A good part of my business is maintaining Linux and BSD
servers on the internet (web servers, mail servers, etc.). Nice thing
about those jobs, aside from not having to work with Windows, is they're
done remotely so I can just slouch about and not even shave if I don't
feel like it.
