And yet, it's the exact same thought process I would use today -- "does
the manufacturer have a Linux driver?" (If yes, buy the cheapo printer,
with full knowledge it's a loss-leader to force me to buy their toner).

Good thing I don't buy "new" HP then, lowend or otherwise.

And even at "authentic Brother" prices, a full rack of CMYK lasts so
long in my MFC machine that it just doesn't really matter what they're
doing internally to "force" me to use their carts (not like I wouldn't
anyway, too much bad taste in my mouth from refurbished options back in
college).

I think you missed a few key points here:

1. Open Printing is a "community driven" site
2. Open Printing only cares about open-source drivers.

So, if people are buying something that the manufacturer just has a
driver for on their website (for example the $120 HL-L2305W ... because
I like network-able printers), chances you'll find it on the open
printing site are low. Well, with the caveat that many brother printers
*do* work with the opensource PCL driver, so ...
