i ended up getting it to work again by downgrading to
previous version aka 2.2.3-1

And did you submit a bug report at Debian? (if it's actually a problem
of Mutt and not a config problem).

the mutt mailing list has a topic on this but i cannot
get a message through to that list because gmane gateway
isn't getting through.

no, i don't think it is a Debian problem as the error
is being reported by others in different contexts.

after being more educated i see the patch is coming from
Debian so i did file a bug report with Debian.
