I live in Belgium and have Telenet as my carrier. Officially they only
support Apple, Samsung and Huawei when it comes to WiFi calling. I asked
them to try and activate it for my Pixel 6.

When I told them the setting for WiFi calling was nowhere to be found
they told me this was strange since they don't have anything to do with
that.

This is what I should see (English):
<https://storage.googleapis.com/support-forums-api/attachment/message-140838676-6621055950908800184.png>

This is what I see (Dutch:)
<https://i.postimg.cc/dtsY4P9J/Screenshot-20220519-124537.png>

So the option simply isn't there. It should at least be there and
greyed-out. It was the same on my Pixel 3.

I started searching and found this:
<https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/134468361/no-wifi-calling-option-on-pixel-6-pro?hl=en>
(There's even another Telenet customer in that discussion.)

In short: Google doesn't sell the Pixel 6 in Belgium (I got mine in
Germany) and since they can't guarantee WiFi calling in Belgium they
simply *deleted* the option. This is basically illegal because if it
works in one EU country it should work all over in the EU.

But Google doesn't care and now I have a smartphone that supports WiFi
calling and I can't use it. And it seems I'm f*cked as well when it
comes to 5G since this also isn't supported (yet) in Belgium.

I think my next smartphone will be a Xiaomi...

I wonder if there's a way to change the provisioning.

I don't know for Pixel, but for Samsung it was possible to flash the
firmware from the 'wrong' carrier/country, which would get you access to
features your carrier didn't offer. I'm not seeing firmware for different
countries for the Pixel 6 (apart from a few networks like Verizon), but I
suppose it might be picking up the MCC/MNC. Maybe there is a database for
that - this looks likely:
https://source.android.com/devices/tech/config/carrier

Probably requires root to change it. Although if a 'properly signed carrier
app' exists for your network you could try installing/sideloading it.

Root came to mind, but I've done this in the past and it results in
several apps (offered by my carrier who is also my internet and
television provider) not working anymore. But I will certainly keep it
in mind when 5G coverage in Belgium improves. At the moment it is very
poor even though we're a very small country.

I was just amazed at the stunt Google was pulling. They should get a
major fine for this. \-:

How to you come to this conclusion? That is a problem of your service
provider in the first place and not Gooogle. Wifi calling is a network
service.

Why do you buy a phone that is not supported in your country? In Germany
it seems to work. That does not stipulate that it has to work in Belgium
or any other country.

Next mistake. Sorry.

Hi S or B,

I'd like to help you out, as you've helped me many times in the past.
<https://i.postimg.cc/9fYvr91P/wificalling02.jpg> WiFi calling Activity

I thank you for bringing up this issue which I know absolutely nothing
about, but in trying to see if I can help you, I found my settings:
<https://i.postimg.cc/VN5K5k6Z/wificalling01.jpg> Wi-Fi Calling

Which is just an "Activity" inside of Android, where, sometimes, not often
but certainly I've seen that "some" Android "Activities" are merely hidden.

If so, you can "unhide" them by calling the Activity directly perhaps.
To help you out, I ran an Activity "inspector" program as I went to my
Wi-Fi calling settings, and found out the Activity is this on my phone:
[com.sec.unifiedwfc/com.sec.unifiedwfc.LaunchUnifiedActivity]

While you can run that Activity if you know how, it's easier if we can find
an app that already does that for you, assuming that's the right Activity.

Looking for an app that does that for you, these came up with "may" work.
*Wifi Calling* by Widget7 "Enable the hidden Wifi Calling VoWifi function"
Free, +ads, Requires GSF, rated 3.5, 500K installs
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.widget7.wifi.calling>

That app just brings up the hidden Android Activity which may be all that
you need to do if my guess is correct that Google just hid it on you.

If not, this app "says" it does the WiFi calling functionality.
*Wifi Calling - Wifi Voice Call* by Cold One Epic Apps
Free, +ads, Requires GSF, rated 3.3, 10K+ installs
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=best.free.apps.wificallingapp>

Let us know if either of those two options work for you to allow you to set
the Android phone to perform Wi-Fi calling like God herself intended it to.

I'm having a similar issue with Virgin Media in the UK

In the past, their policy was that unless the phone is on a list of specific
models they wouldn't enable it, now at least they will try any phone that claims
to support WiFi calling, but it's tough if it doesn't work.

I had a pixel3 (still do as a backup) that phone worked for WiFi calling when I
tested with someone else's EE SIM, now have a Pixel5a.

I just extended my contract with Virgin, so they sent out a new SIM (somewhat
pointless, but hey) so I thought I'd try again, they say my SIM is already
enabled for WiFi calling, but they would push out the settings again.

They say just go into Phone/.../Settings/Calls/WiFi calling and enable it, but
that option doesn't exist when their SIM is in the phone, so I believe the phone
hides that option when it's not provisioned for it.

From the Phone dial pad, I can enter *#*#4636#*#* to get to the Android Phone
Info section, which shows whether features like VoLTE and WiFi calling are
enabled, it says it is not enabled

<http://andyburns.uk/misc/pixel5a-phone-info.png>

Further from there, the .../IMS Service Status dialog shows basically the same

<http://andyburns.uk/misc/pixel5a-ims-status.png>

I don't think I have any other working SIM that has WiFi calls enabled, but I
can try my SIM in a Galaxy A21s which I have kicking around.

I would really like to get this working, but I've spent an hour on a phone call
with one support person, and an hour on a text conversation with another, they
left it with the "cop out" of wait 24 hours because of the new SIM, power off
wait 5 minutes, torn on and try again, which of course did nothing ...

Maybe they missed out spin around widdershins three times with your tongue
poking out?

Well, my Pixel3 was a genuine UK model, true they don't sell the Pixel5a outside
USA/Japan I had to grey import it, I think I need to find different SIM(s) to
try in my phones, or different phones to try with my SIM

As you say it's very frustrating, there are a couple of places I go with shit
indoor coverage and WiFi calling would really help.

That is exactly what happens with my Pixel 4. My provider is
theoretically providing Wifi-Calling but it does not work on Pixel phones.

Connetivitywise Pixel phones are substandard compared to iPhones
starting with the iPhone 5S more than half a decade ago.

Yes, mostly Nexus/Pixel devices are "clean android" with one worldwide firmware
release, though occasionally they do a tied-in version for some countries or
networks.

My phone wasn't bought from Virgin, it was grey-imported from Hong Kong, but
somehow (MCC/MNC or possibly a SIM update message?) it has identified some
Virgin operator settings

You do not understand much: Wifi Calling is not part of it.

3G and onwards are not GSM-Standards anymore.

Many carriers (like Verizon) will shut down GSM and CDMA in 2022.

And you don't consider that 3GPP is very much the successor organisation to
ETSI/GSM?

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3GPP>

Ooh look, they're responsible for IMS (which includes WiFi calling)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generic_Access_Network

When a user buys equipment independently of the service provider he has
to make sure that the wanted services are accessible on the new
equipment *before purchase*. Especially when the service is essential.

And for you to write down again: Wfi-Calling is a network service.

A Pixel 6 will work in all 5G-networks adhering to the 5G-standard(s).
Also in Belgium.

Pixel 6: GR1YH[4]
Pixel 6 Pro: GF5KQ[4]

Compatible networks

GSM / EDGE UMTS / HSPA+ / HSDPA LTE 5G sub-6 / mmWave

On my Pixel 6 Pro the WiFi is listed, and can be enabled. It was already
enabled. I'm on Virgin £6.00 a month (just been increased to ? £6.37).

Thanks, it's handy to know that there are some Virgin+Pixel customers with it
working

Presumably the wifi options within *#*INFO#*#* do say provisioned/available in
your case?

Mine's just decreased from £12.05 to £7.00

Yes, in IMS status:

IMS Registration: Registered
Voice over LTE: Unavailable
Voice over WiFi: Available
Video calling: Unavailable
UT Interface: Available.

I also have the Virgin Internet, if that makes any difference?

Further, my wife's phone /doesn't/ have Voice over Wi-Fi! Her contract is
older than mine. I renewed less than a year ago to get 5G capability, and a
new SIM for that.

Yes, home broadband (200/20 Mbps)

My old SIM was 3+ years old, when I got the Pixel5a I just transferred the SIM
over and it didn't need anything changing for 5G to work (in the few places
locally where I know there's signal) but they recently sent me a new SIM after I
went from rolling 30 day to 12 month contract.

There was a time when technical support at Virgin Media (well, Blueyonder)
could be contacted and you would get good answers quickly. Now all I get is
the usual switch off/on, reboot garbage. Sometimes it's even in an accent one
can understand.

I do hope you can get this fixed.

So my provider can change the menu settings on my phone? No, they can
not. They've confirmed this: they can (try and) activate WiFi calling,
but they can *not* change my menu settings. The setting should at least
be there, in my case, greyed-out. It's not. Pixel 3 and 4a have the same
problem.

According the EU laws, it does (or so I've been told). Also, I did not
say the phone wasn't supported; it simply isn't sold here in Belgium.
There's a difference. But seems enough reason for Google to not enable
the WiFi calling menu setting.

The phone isn't sold in the Netherlands either and 5G is available:
<https://pixel.withgoogle.com/5G/>

In Belgium, 5G is still early days, so I expect it's going to work.
Thing is, there is no 5G coverage (yet) where I'm at, so I can't test
it. But I'm more concerned about the lack of support for WiFi calling.

My brother has one. It supports both WiFi calling and 5G.

I just read Andy Burns's follow-up: apologies to you. I'll have to
search for someone with another provider (with better WiFi calling
support) and borrow his/her SIM so I can see if the setting appears.

It seems so. It's probably me, but I find this strange. Why not show a
greyed-out option?

It's not enabled at my end. My provider tried to activate, but all it
did was stop the SMS (about failed settings) that I got every time I
turned on the phone.

My mother lives near a small airport, so coverage is poor (no large
antennas allowed). In the past, our provider sold us an MCE and this
works. But they don't sell those anymore (because 'WiFi calling is a
better alternative'), so I fear the day that the MCE stops working,
because I won't get another.

Officially, my provider supports WiFi calling only for 3 brands: Apple,
Samsung and Huawei (this puzzles me) and it has been like this for a
couple of years. But I know of other customers with other brands who
were able to activate WiFi calling on their phones. Too bad Pixel is not
one of them.
