Hello.

Does anyone find the trackpads annoying and too big? Typing keeps touching it. Is
there a way to disable 2020's 13" Intel MBP's trackpad when the mouse is
connected? Right now, it's covered with a thick cloth.

Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon. :)

Doesn't seem to be a problem here, like ever. Nor for anyone else I know
who uses them.

You must be doing something differently than most people.

Ah. You're using a mouse - with a laptop. Maybe that's the source of
your problem.

> Right now, it's covered with a thick cloth.

That could be a problem as well. You are certainly doing very strange
things with your trackpad - things most people don't do. And that may
explain why you are having problems most people don't have.

I only have the trackpad activate while typing if I am typing very
slowly.

Yes, there is. have you loked at the trackpad settings? Or possibly in
the Mouse settings or maybe in accessibility.

Ah, it is accessibility:

The trackpad is one of the Mac's outstanding features. I even purchased a "Magic Trackpad" for my desktop - keyboard in the middle, mouse on
the right and trackpad on the left.

The trackpad should recognize whether you're actually using one or multiple fingers (and therefore *want* it to react) or if it's just another
part of your hand. And in the latter case, it shouldn't react at all. At least that's how it has worked on my last couple of Macbooks.

You could use the "Better Touch Tool" to change some of the settings of the trackpad. For example, disable gesture recognition of the pad after
any key on the keyboard is pressed. There's also a related setting there to reenable the trackpad only after a press on it in the center.

Regards
Fermin

Exactly my setup, only I use trackball instead of a mouse.

BTT is an amazing tool.

Trackpads and trackballs in front of the keyboard have always been a
rather silly idea ... but definitely WAY better than the ridiculous
little joystick-nub thing in the middle of the keyboard that some
laptops used to have. A better option was the original Portable Mac
which had its trackball to the side of the keyboard (where the numeric
pad is on a 'extended' keyboard).

It got worse when they introduced 'touch click' because it did become
far too easy to accidentally click something. That was always one of
the first options I turned off when setting up new Macs.

The reality is that most laptops sit on a desk 24/7 and have external
mice / trackpads and keyboards anyway (even external screens) ... you
may as well just buy a desktop Mac and either save money or get better
specs.

it's the best possible place, which is why that's where there are on
almost every laptop.

true.

nope. that would require laptops to be significantly wider than
necessary.

tap to click doesn't false that easily, although it's not needed.

no they very definitely don't do that. not even close to reality.

Perfect and thanks. I did look in the other places like trackpad. Strange to find it in accessiblity.

Not really strange, no. Most people don't have the problem you have, and
those that do are often disabled or have special needs.

I don't especially like track pads. I find them awkward to use and much
less precise than a good mouse.

If I find myself forced to use a laptop for an extended period of time,
I usually hook up a mouse.

You're in the minority too.

The each have advantages, there are many things that are much better
with a trackpad, and a few that are much better with a good trackball
(or a mouse if you like filthy rodents).

Selecting multiple things from a list, for example, I use my trackball.
Switching spaces, using Mission Control, editing photos, usimg the
various gestures I've defined in BTT, scrolling, etc the trackpad is
much better.

Don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your
choices are half chance; so are everybody else's.
