I had (have) a copy of Photoshop 2.0 for Mac. Came with one of the
scanners I bought when I had a IIci. My recollection is layers came
with 2.5. I also have an old Illustrator, maybe 5, I can't recall now.

I haven't run it in years, which probably helps keep it as my favorite
vector graphics editor.

2.5 added windows support.

3.0 added layers.

no reason why it wouldn't be a favourite.

There's a story about a guy who worked at Apple who kept hearing Steve
Jobs say how much better something worked on Next, so the guy brought in
his Next Cube and would show Jobs how it worked. Memories distort
reality.

not exactly a good comparison.

illustrator, on both mac and windows, has been and still is the
standard to which others are compared.

Why not?

Do you not understand I'm comparing my use of Illustrator on a Mac IIci
in the 1990s to my use of Inkscape (and other runs on Unix/Linux)
software now?

Elijah

would consider buying a copy of Illustrator if it were sold for modern Linux

because it was comparing software on a well established platform that
redefined the industry with what was available on a failed platform.

that doesn't change anything.

photoshop in the 1990s had features that the gimp still does not have,
and according to the gimp's roadmap, never will.

inkscape is still playing catch-up.

illustrator, photoshop and other adobe products set the standard to
which others are compared.
