....there doesn't seem to be any such commamd on my system,
howsoever weird that might seem tonyou.

What you should have done, if you didn't understand my post, is to do:

man tcsh

and then search for cwdcmd. Then all would be revealed.

Anyway, to get you out of the ditch and back on the road, just enter this command:

unalias cd;alias cwdcmd ls

Then do: cd /etc
and, voila!
