Looking forward to the first 2022 weekend I checked up the Formula F results. Shocking! Only 3 FF cars raced, none of them the guys that win on a regular basis.

Perhaps our resident race car driver can shed some light on poor turnout.

Let's see:

Two guys are waiting on engines to be completed

One guy is from the US and he may be against getting vaccinated, but I
need to call him and see what's up.

For myself, there was a SNAFU with getting my medical completed, so I
didn't have a racing license despite making my application in a
relatively timely manner.

Keith, Felim and Erle probably enjoyed running up front in light traffic for a change.

Sounds like they just had the luck of not having any delays from off-season work,
either because they started much earlier, or they didn't need (or pay) for much, as
there's still supply chain challenges & cascading effects (including labor crunches).
Case in point, this past month I heard that a local specialist in car interiors had been
asked to quote to replace an entire headliner, and their answer was "..before talking
cost, let's talk schedule: August. Still interested?".

Not talking about wrecks at all, but just the prospects of correctly replacing old OEM textiles.

For wrecks, they can often take months even without supply chain issues, because of the
work it can involve, especially done right. Earlier this month, I happened to be over at the shop
when a PCA track car was returning from having major work done. Despite being a glass-out
roller, one couldn't casually tell that last fall, it had left the track at 120mph, and the onboard
telemetry said that he was still doing 70mph when he hit a barrier. A mere six months and
a couple of Honda's worth of cash. Plus probably another ~3 weeks to go, to get the rest of
it put back together, so they missed Tech Inspection on 4/11 for this season's first race. TI for
the next race (Mid-Ohio) isn't until 9 May, so IMO he has a good chance of it being ready in time.
Of course track cars often have stripped interiors, so no need to wait for a headliner <g>.

Don't be so quick to assume. I had gotten a nail in one of my snow tires when they were swapped
out this spring (can't be patched), and the shop has been working to source a replacement for the
past 3 weeks. Latest news is that they believe they found one in stock; hopefully just a 4-5 week
supply chain delay, which is way up from the traditional 4-5 days.

If that doesn't pan out, the alternatives are:

a) wait until fall and hope that the OEM doesn't change the tire composition/design before it goes
back into seasonal production and hope that one becomes available in inventory by November...

Or:

b) throw out 3 good tires (lots of tread/etc) and buy four (4) tires of a different brand/tread pattern

Or:

c) remove & store 2 good tires (backups) and buy just two (2) of same brand if deemed "close enough";
shave both new (same procedure as would be done for the base case) to diameter parity w/existing.

The FF rules allow for a range of tire options and a local club can set it's own specs. Alan said "preferred" tire supplier, not "only".

You are, are you?

I didn't say it was impossible: only that it was complicating our season.

Some people had no usable tires for this season. Some (such as myself)
had tires purchased for last year that they don't want to go to waste.

So the people who need new tires are purchasing different tires than the
folks who have sets from last year.

Guess what: different tires from different manufacturers have different
levels of grip.

I said "OUR preferred tire supplier"; the one ALL the racers at Mission
had agreed we would use in preference to the actual only ONE tire that
was officially legal in Formula F.

The loss of the tires throws the whole thing into confusion as some
people still have those tires and some must switch a different tire that
will have different characteristics; including different grip.

Details like that matter, Liarboy.
