It's Thursday! That means we're getting a much-anticipated new game
from Epic. It's going to be 'nuclear themed' (there are hints in the
'wrapping paper' of the next 'mystery game' as to what's inside, and
today's 'wrapping paper' had mushroom clouds), so guesses were that
maybe it was Fallout game? Duke Nukem? Red Alert? Defcon 5? Well, now
we know:

Today's game is:

* Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role-Playing Game
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/fallout
* Fallout 2
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/fallout-2*
Fallout Tactics
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/fallout-tactics-brotherhood-of-steel

It's three games! But it's Fallout. Because it's /always/ Fallout.
And it's nice to see the originals being given away; they're fine
games, if quite long in the tooth (honestly, I can't imagine any but
the most die-hard fans playing these, although I'm sure a lot of
people will claim the trilogy just because they enjoyed the Bethesda
games). Still, I was hoping for some originality from Epic, but no,
they choose the safe route. Oh well. I'll add it to the library, where
they can sit next to my CD-ROM, GOG and Steam versions. Hey, I wonder
if I can get them on Amazon Prime too?

24 hours until the next one... something to do with bodybuilding?

Maybe more people want these games then you think. I had to come back
to claim them as I kept getting 'we are experiencing high traffic,
please try again later' or something to that affect when I tried
grabbing them.

Yeah, I noticed that too. It actually delayed my posting because I
couldn't get the URLs to the individual games because the website
wasn't responding ;-)

Anyway, I was not saying that lots of people don't WANT the games. I
just don't expect that a lot of people will be PLAYING the games once
they've acquired them. I think nostalgia (and a desire to complete the
series) is driving demand more than anything else. And even amongst
those who do go to the next step and actually download the game, I
think few of them will stick with it very long. The games - excellent
as they may be - are old ("Fallout 1" was a DOS game!) and lack a lot
of the conveniences that modern gamers expect.

The epic client has removed the daily free games from the frontpage of
the store, I notice :( Had to go into Browse to list them

I still haven't played any Fallout games. I wonder if I will enjoy them.

If you do play them you'll want the fixes before playing. I don't know if
any are applied to these or not. Fallout 1 has a problem where the
random encounters are tied to your computer clock speed.... with a
modern computer that's really bad, either resulting in no encounters
or being only able to move a pixel or so before getting an encounter.
I don't remember which, but there was some fix that changed it to
the other one, and a later fix that actually fixed it to be what it should
be.

Fallout 2 just has a multitude of bugs even with official patches.

I haven't played Tactics on a modern computer so can't say
there. Of those this is the only one that can be played real-time
if you want, IIRC it was one of the few 'real time with pause' games
that actually worked well.

Much the same here, another client to get them on (I may not have had
Tactics except as physical, but may have sold/given it away at some
point. I remember it being fun, but otherwise not particularly memorable
enough to want to play it again.)

Wait. I thought these games were patched by Epic to run on modern PCs.

I don't mind turn based as long as it is fun. I'm old now so I can't play
very fast games!

I assume these are patched and fixed at least. Haven't tried on Epic,
but my copy of Fallout 1 on Steam is playable without issues.
