Yamn already sends dummy messages automatically. When using
pure yamn.exe and with the trace option on you can see that. It does
not do that however with every message IIRC.

Yup, see the Message -> Dummy tab.

I just sent a test dummy message that resulted in 12 chunks.

A previous message that I sent with three copies resulted in
12,6,6 for 24 chunks. You can see the encrypted output in the
raw window. You can also enable logging and look there - don't
leave it on. Logs a log.

Why not 8,8,8 = three copies of an eight chunk message?

There's the Scheduler pulldown-menu at the Misc|Dummy tab
to activate dummy message automation.

AFAICS YAMN adds to a message it creates a 1-packet 1-hop dummy message (delivery
method 255 = dummy, text "I hope Len approves") with a probability of 80/256.

That would mean along with about every third sent message a single dummy packet is
created and sent as well.

So for example, if you put out 11 packets
a) 11 copies of a 1-chunk message are impossible due to YAMN's copies restriction
b) an 11-chunk message sent in only 1 copy is very unreliable, thus also unlikely
-> there has to be a dummy packet plus 2 or 5 message packets * 5 or 2 copies.

With 12 packets you can be quite sure, that there's no dummy message, as otherwise
a) and b) in the 11-packets example above also had to be considered.

And so on ...

Whether such single dummy packets are useful is open to dispute.

If you care about that level of attention on your Internet connection,
sending dummies from a dedicated client is probably futile.

A better solution is to run a public remailer and stealth-ish-ly inject
your messages into its pool, either by local command or sending them
through a (padded) VPN link.

Maybe if the client connects through hidden Tor services to its chosen
entry remailer, the watcher on your ISP line cannot count the packets
anymore.
