In the meantime, I'm wrapping up lunch and listening to the cooling fan spin away in my
Dell Latitude 5411 laptop (10th Gen i7) and pumping out a surprising amount of heat,
considering that all I was doing was reading some news webpages in a web browser.

Even if one wants to "but other background tasks", that's just MS-Teams & -Outlook
running, with the most recent Teams message being 25 minutes old and Outlook
having only received four (4) emails within the past hour...kinda hard to claim that
that constitutes anything close to even a moderate (let alone heavy) workload.

The fact is, Windows is a resource hog. It was designed that way. It
was never intended - in fact, it never occurred to the programmers who
designed/built Windows NT 30 years ago - that Windows NT would EVER be
running on batteries. It was designed as a Server OS.

Thus, you boot up your Windows 10 laptop today, and before you do anything,
there are 150 processes running using 1800 threads. 🙄

2 years ago, I had a Surface Pro X. I wanted to see what Windows on ARM
was all about.

It was a joke. Yes, it had ARM CPUs. Eight of them. But they always ran
at 3 GHz. They NEVER slowed down. Plus, some parts of the OS - and most
of the included apps - were running Intel code in emulation. So much for
battery life.

For example, Edge browser was ARM native, and ran very nicely. But the
background service that always was running, checking for Edge updates, was
Intel code.

How fucking retarded is that? Plus Notepad, WMP, Wordpad, Paint, etc. were
ALL X86 code. The “worlds largest software company” couldn’t be bothered
to assign a couple junior programmers to covert this stuff to ARM?

Needless to say, I gave up and sold the Pro X on eBay. The hardware was
very nice. As good as an iPad. But WOA was pathetic.

WOA makes as much sense as iOS on Intel.

The whole point of ARM is that the hardware drops down into very low power
mode when nothing is going on. Thus it can go for 80 hours when idle and
the screen is off.

Windows will never be able to do that. Because there is never a time when
nothing is going on.

Maybe it is better now. I don’t know and don’t care. The whole concept
of a “Windows tablet” is an oxymoron. Windows needs all the power it can
get.

And it needs it all the time. Not to mention that very little Windows
software is useable without a keyboard and mouse. Not touch friendly at
all.

Don’t get me started on that.

basis for Appleinsider's report of Gartner Research's numbers.

There were no facts in the article, just estimates. The facts are in Apple's quarterly report that came out after the article was published on July 11..

I read the article. It states:

"While PC shipments have seen the sharpest decline in nine years, researchers suspect that Apple has seen nearly 10% growth year-over-year, shipping about 6.4 million Macs in Q2 2022."

The Apple sales and profits report is for the same Q2 2022. Do you know the meaning of "suspect" and "year-over-year"?

CY Q2 BTW is April-June. Both the Apple $ sales and the Gartner report are April-June numbers. The IDC Q2 unit estimates line up a lot better with the Q2 Apple $ sales numbers.

So strange that once again you are not aware of the calendar.
